Soviet VLF long range communication towers, Latvia

Not far from the city of Kuldiga, stands what is now left of one out of 17 VLF stations between Kaliningrad and Leningrad ( now Saint Peters-burg ). These stations usually consisted from transmitting towers and special ground or underground structures and were used for long range communications with Soviet sea vessels. This one in particular, also known as "Upīškalns" occupied 170 hectares of land and was built as 1 central plus 6 other about 220m high towers around the perimeter with accompanying houses and a bunker with built-in power plant. The construction began on 1988 and was completely finished by 1992 ( with 1 year interruption due to local population health concerns ). As far as we know this station was never used the way Soviets intended.

Today 3 out of 7 towers are still standing, stripped from their original transmitters, however, they are still in use - by mobile carriers, local radio stations and amateur radio enthusiasts. The rest of them were dismounted during the "Perestroika".

That's enough of history lessons, so here are the photos. At that height, we were not concentrating on the artistic side too much, we must admit. ( Click to enlarge, dial up/data plan warning ):

Grauzti.lv is one of the leading UE teams in Latvia. Founded in 2006, it slowly gained the momentum to explore majority of sites within and many outside the borders of our country, thus having HD photo materials measuring near 1TB, some of which is viewable on our website. We are now looking to cooperate with fellow urban explorers from other countries to visit and host events. If you are interested please let us know - [email protected]

An example of such collaboration is our tour through a couple of Soviet missile silo's with Martin Trolle and his friends from Denmark:
