One of my favorite places in town, been vacant for the past 10 years & will be torn down soon.

This was the Hospital for the insane, shut down in 94 due to allegations of patient abuse.

*I consider this the icon of the site, it is the 2nd oldest building beside the Powerhouse.*

*Evans building was the Children's Ward - has another building on site just like this, the Bolton building.*

*Old Powerhouse, decommissioned in the 80's, a new one was built across from this*

It upsets me that they are going to tear it down. First, because I haven't seen it yet, but most of all because they could rehab it and use it for another health facility.

Well, that was fun.

Central State's pretty good, the last time I was there I ran into two different dogs, one in Evans and one was outside of the dining complex. As far as rehabbing it, some of the buildings could be saved, like the administration building, amusement hall, laundry, and the maintenance shop. The three newest buildings, however, are wasted. It really says something to the way buildings used to be built when the older buildings in this complex are the ones that held up the best, while the newest ones just didn't make it. Here's some from the inside:
Evans ward dining area:

Yeah, the Admin building looked to be in the best shape, but the Evans building was getting ready to collapse any moment, I know the newly built fire station on the corner uses Central State as a training ground - so the buildings are not structurally safe at all. I love the tunnels that run underneath the site, I can't believe they have about 5 miles of tunnel there.

I apologize if the images are small, gotta get used to how the uploads work.

best way to do it is to upload to somewhere like Flickr and then link back to the file. Flickr's nice because it gives you different sizes. anything in the range of 640-800 pixels is sufficiently large i think. personal preference, though.

if it's a sweet panorama, you're allowed to make us scroll for it. =)

The 2nd oldest is the "Amusement Hall", originally it was part of the first Kirkbride and used as a dining hall. Pathology Building/museum would be 3rd. The Admin building was built about the time they demolished the original Kirkbride 1939-1941, they built 5 or 6 2-story cottages to replace it. The 2nd Kirkbride was around until the mid-1970s when they built those god awful Evans & Bolton buildings. As for the property being re-developed, there's always big plans that stall once they remember there's all those unmarked graves on the property & no developer wants to mess with that. As of '07 the police & fire departments stopped using the property for training since someone complained about asbestos.

9/11/01 all gave some, some gave all. 343.

Unless I'm mistaking this for a different location, they were using the grounds for police dog training about a month ago. At first I thought it was just some kind of picnic or something. Luckily Injektilo can read and noticed that their tshirts said something about K9 training. We left.

Police horse training grounds i do believe. There a just a ton of factors that make this risky IMO.

Here is some archived discussion on Central State that may be of interest. Also, it's worth saying again, the Pathology museum really is worth checking out (on the official tour).

Its not that bad, police are never really there when I went (gone 4 times), I mostly did tunnel entries.

I found that the first 2 times going to this facility, it was really exciting, but when the 3rd & 4th came around, I had about enough of the facility.

*Tunnel from Powerhouse to New Powerhouse, Admin & Bahr.*

Couldn't say, but its gonna take ALOT of money to demo & rebuild on site, also noting the unmarked cemetery & tunnels underneath the campus. I'd say there's plenty of time to visit.

I don't see how the state can afford to demo such sites, they don't have the money in the first place. Kinda the same with Indy Coke Plant.

Ok, thanks. And isn't the Coke Plant being used as a IPS bus depot?

No, the Coke plant isn't. I was there a few weeks ago and no activity there other than the security guard.
