Deep beneath whitewashed suburbia, sunset glows on shattered stone.

Not many people in this enclave of militant Home Owners Associations and draconian zoning boards realize that for over 20 years, a yawning crater has been growing, ever deeper, on the edge of town. Cut off from the cookie-cutter neighborhoods by a freeway and a state park, it is one of the largest crushed stone quarries in the state.

Thanks to Aurelie and AnAppleSnail for scoping this place, breaking me out of my heat-and-humidity-induced stupor to go out and explore something, and for waiting up for me when I was running a little late. I arrived just as the sun was touching the rim of the pit, casting an orange glow over the bare rock.

More shots in my Flickr set.

1. Sunset over the Pit.

2. Sunset Glows on Shattered Stone.

3. Bare stone cliffs, though they may not turn many heads out west, are quite a rarity here in our lush, flat area. We felt like we were in another place entirely.

4. Those things really are bigger than they look.

5.

6. The most massive and least fun tire swing EVER.

7.

8. Control Tower

9. Stairs

10. Zig-zag Industry

11. Tonka Trucks

Well done, nice to be outside in that kind of light rather than down a dank moldering subterranean hole beneath crumbling infrastructure no?

Kudos for braving the heat.

After midnight, a robot bear comes out driving an invisible dump truck. I'm not even kidding.

I'm flattered! I shot with a digital PNS and then adjusted by hand in Photoshop. So: Neither?

Great shots! #10 is beautiful; I love how it's composed. #11 is cool too. If you've ever been up close to one of those quarry trucks, their size is absolutely mind-blowing.

Quarries can be incredibly beautiful. There's one here in Johnson City that I often like to go to on a clear night with a bright full moon. Quarries become beautiful martian landscapes in that type of lighting. (but it doesn't photograph well in moonlight so leave the camera behind and bring a date instead )

It's funny you say that, I was thinking of doing a full moon trip. What's makes them hard to photograph in that type of lighting?

I think it's just hard to get the depth. It might just be that I suck, but I've never been able to capture that in a way that actually shows its true beauty. Try just looking at one of those beautiful, huge rock faces with one eye closed; suddenly it doesn't look anywhere near as beautiful anymore.

Really, it might just be that I suck. A moonlit quarry at night, for me, is one of those experiences that is incredibly beautiful in person, but takes all of your senses to really experience it, not just a little two dimensional replication of one of the five senses. But maybe that's just me. This is why I'm not a UE photographer.

I'm up for that. Saturday I'm headed to Greenville for a week though.

We'll hang out with this guy:
