| | | The Town That Was (Documentary on Centralia, PS) < on 7/8/2010 1:52 PM >
| | | Don't know if this has been posted yet or how ripe for exploration the town its self is, but I found this very interesting, very interesting documentary on Centralia, PA. If anyone doesn't know, Centralia is a near ghost town that was all but wiped out by an underground fire that's been burning for decades. It also inspired Silent Hill. Anyway, interesting stuff. | | | There's been a thread or two about it. It comes up now and again. There's not too much left there, but it is still fun to visit (in my opinion) for what it is.

I guess nondescript and overgrown foundations, empty lots and sulfur vents don't suit you fancy? I basically just like the barren section of Rt 61. I don't know why really, it's just cool - to me.

| | | The town I grew up in was right down the road from here. Worth seeing once, but no more... Plus the fires have moved from under the town to the outer wooded areas and you have to search to find the really hot spots... This is the best of it: The famous "Centralia Bench":
The miners shrine (Note its made of 2 bathtubs):
And the closed highway:
Everything else has been leveled with the exception of a few occupied homes.

Nope, State Police have mandated that there will be no further recreational use of the land. All properties are owned by the government and only foot traffic is allowed in designated places.

How strictly do they enforce that?

| | | I can't imagine why I would be PA but I would love to see this place, if only for a little while. I first heard about it years ago, when the Silent Hill movie was coming out. Not surprisingly, Centralia served as inspiration. Hadn't thought about it since unitl I saw this movie. Fascinating place, but sad. I havent been there in some time, but the road that passes through the town usually has a trooper there shooting radar, so I would say if he saw you there with a quad he may ask some questions.

I've ran into an Ashland town cop and a Statie in the same day. There is nothing they can do to enforce that, too many trails. Plus they aren't going to take their cruiser onto the abandoned highway. They blocked the highway off again but there are already new paths around the barricade. The government only owns a small amount of the land surrounding Centralia iirc and I say that the strip mines are fair game for offroading. You can't damage the land much more than what has already been done. The town itself if pretty boring but there are some pretty cool abandoned drag lines up off the main roads. Most people just skip the smaller stuff and head straight to the breaker instead of exploring the area more in depth. [last edit 7/9/2010 4:46 PM by RenegadeOfFunk - edited 1 times]

Back in the day I used to park right along the barricade, but since then they filled in land around there. Is it 'safe' (ie. will my car get towed) to park in front of the entrance to the abandoned highway?

| | | You should be fine. I parked there as a state cop was leaving and he didn't bother me. I can't imagine them towing a car for being parked there.
