Abandoned artificial lake - Santo da Serra, Madeira

Our last UE trip took place in an old abandoned lagoon in one of the most amazing landscapes in Madeira Island. Inserted in a deep forestal area, this lagoon was first built in 1980 with the intent of supplying the inhabitants with water. These inhabitants were mostly consisted of farmers. Since the area suffered a major depopulation, the artificial lagoon has been abandoned. The lack of maintenance, and the strong erosion effects is well visible in these photos. I hope you like it.

1. Overview of the artificial lagoon

2. Once filled, the water level is almost at the bottom. Notice the material used to prevent the erosion all lifted up. Some kind of hard "carpets" made of plastic and fibber.

3. This was an interesting find. Apparently, this was used to substitute the damaged "carpets"

4. Close up of the above description

5. Abandoned and closed

6. Stagnant and rancid pond found near the artificial lake

7. Old machinery

8. Very old tower. Notice the stair condition. The cold weather eroded completely the iron.

9. Another overview of the lagoon. Notice the fog.

10. Some kind of maintenance building. We found water samples, a bed, and some furniture.

11. Lateral view of the maintenance building

What an unusually cool location...that thing is so big it looks like a meteorite hit and made huge depression...

I rather like the foggy shot...creepy in a way...nice find !!

Yeah, it is a bit creepy. Back in the eighties and early nineties, it was a very nice place to hang out. Lots of people used to go there. it is a nice place to hide bodies. ;)

I have to admit, I was thinking "wtf is an abandoned lake?" and didn't have anything like this in mind. This is pretty cool. It looks more like a blast crater. Pretty awesome.
