|  | | | So on my latest excursion onto some roofs I mange to get roofing tar on my left arm. I spent forever washing it off and A LOT of scrubbing which left my arm pretty sore, and it still wasn't all off. So I am asking if any of you have any tips on getting tar off effectively.

goo-gone. Don't lay/kneel/roll/crawl on roofs without gloves. HOT water with sand in it helps a bit.

| | | | I remember once as a kid I stuck my whole arm into a big bucket of tar. My dad freaked out, and I believe we used paint thinner to remove it. I imagine any strong solvent would work, though. Just remember to do so in a well ventilated area, away from fire! And make sure to irrigate with water afterward/wash with soap. Solvents on skin = not cool.

Non polar solvent. :p
Acetone, Ethanol, Isopropanol, Gasoline, Ethyl Ether, etc.
Ethanol/IPA are prolly the safest ones.
PROTIP: stay off rooftops that are so hot the tar's melting. :p

No, it rubs off on you at any temperature, although it flows more freely in the heat.

EToh is not your best option, Personally I would use acetone. But then again, I have 8 liters in my lab.

hah, maybe I just don't notice since I tend to run.
I have a hardware store within two minutes walking distance, means I have a nice variety of solvents. personally I'd go for IPA or a shower with lots and lots of soap.
Still, I haven't had any significant issue with roof tar... and rooftops happen to be my favorite place in the world.

| | | | Nail polish remover. The acetone in it will rip through most gunk, and since it is meant to come in contact with your skin it will be far less likely to cause any irritation.

I was going to post that I've gotten tar off my hands using that orange-scrub stuff that comes in big industrial bottles, but after reading more I feel like it was a completely different animal than roofing tar, because I always rinsed off the orange soap with water.

| | | | I worked construction for a good many years and so have have had to remove a good amount of this wonderful material from myself. Gasoline, solvents, etc. work but they are bad for you and can cause skin problems.
Mineral oil, Vitamin E oil, or even Olive Oil in liberal amount and some scrubbing with your fingers or (said) oil soaked cloth, then further soap and water (to remove the oil, diluted tar stuff) does the trick well and has no potentially toxic side effects and smells a hell of a lot better.
