Detroit Train station

I haven't been in a while but have been interested to go back to Michigan Central Station. I was wondering if there is anyone here who knows what the condition of it is at this point? I've heard some pretty shady things were going on in there and was curious to know if there is any truth to this? Can someone help a girl out? Thanks

Here are some pictures for all of you other UE's who can't answer.
(I realize some of them are a little blurry sorry)

the cops watch it a lot. they park up on a hill behind the place and wait in the bushes. im not kidding, my friends have (or had) video of it on youtube.

other than that and the group that tries to keep the outside looking "nice", i havent heard anything.

I can't speak for the present, but last year I went in w/ another UE enthusiast and we saw no sign of cops or security in any way. That may have changed, but as of last Summer there was no obstacle to getting into the depot.

Last summer was the last time I went, and there was nothing stopping us. For every person I've heard getting caught there, I've heard a few dozen going with no problems at all.

ive personally never had a problem.

if you go down the street on the right (westside) of the train station, go under the bridge and then on the right side of the hill is where the cop (usually homeland security) hides. if you check google earth you can see the road that leads up to where they hide.
ill see if i can find the video......

I went a couple weeks ago, no cops. Last year I would see cops waiting for people to come out. But if you just use your brain and look before you get out of the place then you will be fine.

Quite honestly, if I was seen entering, I'd ignore the guards and keep exploring and shooting. They'd have to come and find me among 12 floors or wait three for hours.

All of that on and off security begs the question: Why in the HELL are cops and/or private security rent a cops so concerned about a building that is, literally speaking, crumbling into rubble on its own ??
I kid you not; when I was there last year, you could HEAR the echos and sounds of debris falling down hither and tither. Moreover, some of the ledges are sagging badly (or, I should say, WERE sagging badly....they have probably collapsed by now) That and the fact that the entire place is severely water logged leads me to guess that, sad as it may sound, the depot is probably not salvageable at this time. Its a real shame too because the structure I saw in 1999 could have been saved. Ten Winters can destroy a building.........

That's why some groups like to post a "lookout" who can call in to whomever is still inside when the coast is clear outside or not.

By the way, I've seen both Border Patrol and CP Railway cops around there (the active railway tunnel to Canada is just southeast of the station). I wonder which would be worse to get busted by?

When I was there in 2003, my buddy fell down the stairs because one of the steps gave out on him. He was fine.

I went by in April of this year (2010). Didn't see any cops or security. In fact there was a graffiti removal crew out front and they didn't seem to care what we were up to. The place was in pretty bad shape. We only made it to floor 7 before the floors started looking really water damaged. Agreed that those floors are not salvageable. Wish I would have seen it before. Also talked to a dude that lives in there and he said that he doesn't even like to go up higher than that.

Went right up to the building last summer, but didn't go in. There was no sign on anyone, cops, security, people in general. It was in the middle of the day.

Saw the outside last Wednesday, crews are prepping the site to film the new Transformers movie. Word is that filming will also take place at Packard and a certain place in Chicago :/

It's very closely watched these days. Be careful. It's still doable though. I was there just a few days ago. You'll run into taggers or other explorers there almost every time you go. I kinda hate that place. There are so many better locations than MCS in Detroit. Everyone just goes to MCS because it's obvious. But it's completely gutted and uninteresting. The lobby is worth seeing...but not really worth the risk of getting caught there, especially when it's the only abandonment in Detroit that is watched by cops at all.

I kinda liked it despite it being a high risk whore.

It's worth seeing at least once.

DHS is more interested in the Windsor-Detroit train tunnel next door than people going into MCS. Don't be obvious and you'll be fine.

ya, if you head behind MCS theres the loading docks, and a few doors are wide open, if you head there at night you can pretty much walk in with no problems.

Building is rough for sure.. We made it up to the top, but couldnt get the roof because the stairs were in rough shape. Lobby holding up well, stone work looks great. The holding area though close to the tracks is horrible, rain was pouring in with almost no roof. The building is definitely something to see once, and it was funny to see these dirt piles in the lobby where someone had obviously been cleaning up. The stairs on the west side of the building are much better than the ones on the east side, perhaps less water. No cops of any kind to be seen.

I was there a few months ago in the middle of a Sunday afternoon. Some music/rap/spoken word thing was going on in the courtyard. So hiding/parking our car wasn't an issue. (basically, our car didn't draw attention.) People were roaming all over the place. 3 groups of explorers entered the building before we went in. No guards no cops anywhere. We did walk most of the perimeter of the building to see if we would stir any guards/cops up... nothing happened. So we entered right through the front window... someone bent the fence... so we used that. Also, We didn't have any issues getting onto the roof. Just be careful... if your not comfortable walking in an area... don't do it. We heard rumors of homeless people, gang members, etc. inside. We only saw other urban explorers.

I ran into some 14 year old kids around the third floor and they asked me how to get to the roof I pointed out the stairwell to them and I'm pretty sure they made it at least to the roof alive as they didn't come back down during the next 20 minutes I was taking pictures and I didn't hear any screams so yeah if a trio of 14 year old kids can get by any explorer should be able to.
