so i was in Barnes and noble and I picked up a copy of "Vanishing portland" an Images of America book. in the book i was looking at the pictures when i noticed a picture explaining that there was a fallout shelter built to house government officials up to 90 days in the event Portland was missed in a nuclear attack.

did some research and this is what i was able to stumble across.

sadly the entrances and escape hatches are said to be all sealed off. however it looks like they only covered the initial entrance with dirt. figured it might be worth digging up? anyways what are your thoughts? thinking i would make a trip to go investigate conditions.

Hey thats really cool. It would, however, be quite difficult to dig up without alerting the parks department. Looks to be two stories deep. Pretty impressive.. the lower floor is flooded no doubt if it is below ground level.

Yeah, its been sealed off. City of Portland poured concrete into the exit shaft and also poured dirt over the main entrance in addition to Kelly Butte Park is now just a natural area.

I know people who actually worked in there during the end of its use as the PSAP for all of Multnomah County.

The day called X was filmed to show how it would have operated.

There was a fire in the interior and lots of damage but the main facility seems to still exist.

There's gotta be a way in. I'm willing to try to find out if anyone else is up for an adventure?

I would also be interested to find these "dispersal areas" and if there were any kind of bunkers there?

The entry shaft. Doesn't mean there aren't entrances through other piping/tunnels etc

ya the reports are that all shafts and exits are filled. except the main. most of sources seem to indicate they just dumped a shitload of dirt there and called it good, however i would expect that they welded the door shut. im always one of those people who has to see it to believe it, always try and find where they got lazy.

I've seen mines that had entrances that looks very similar to this place. The reason all the dirt is there is because a loader and a dozer can do the job cheap with just dirt. It is not impenetrable and susceptible to natural erosion, as many things are. If the entrance was sealed with concrete, there would be no need for the dirt, which could easily be removed if the need arose.

I've spoken to a few people who have worked inside the Kelly Butte 911 Center; one of them who has a contact with someone at the Portland Water Bureau (current owner) has hinted at the fact the main entrance might be also welded from the inside.

How would they get themselves and the welder out? Unless they are waiting like that old knight dude in The Last Crusade.....But if it is in fact welded, then I guess we're all stopped dead in our tracks.

Easy. They weld the door, then exit via the emergency exit, then fill the emergency exit with concrete.

Well shoot. Somebody needs to go find out then.

Who wants to meet somewhere some night this week, go to the site, and find out?
