MDC in Portage la Prairie

Hi,

I'm not new to UE but I haven't actually done any in years. I was pretty active when I lived in Vancouver back in 2003-2006 but have, sadly, lost touch with the hobby.

So hello to everyone over on this side of the forum. I moved to Portage la Prairie, MB a couple of years ago and there is a true gem of an abandonment here.

I did a quick search of the forum for any reference to the Manitoba Developmental Centre (MDC) in Portage la Prairie and found none so I'm posting this on the presumption that it hasn't been explored yet. Perhaps people on here don't really know about it yet.

The MDC is a residential care facility for adults with mental disabilities. There are a couple dozen buildings, including cottages, contained on a campus that spans a few acres on the north end of Portage. The complex is something like 100 years old or so, although not all the buildings date back to that time.

Now, before you start drooling over the thought of a whole shwack of old buildings to explore, you should know that the site is still extremely active. There is only one building that has been completely sealed up and abandoned that sits at the very north end of the complex. I don't know for sure but I believe it was sealed because it is full of asbestos.

This building is screaming to be explored and the only thing that is stopping me from trying my hand at is my job. I'm a reporter at the local newspaper here and I simply can't risk getting caught as it would be career suicide to wind up in the court section of the newspaper that employs me busted for break-and-enter. And this is a government site so anyone caught will be prosecuted.

I have walked around slightly drunk on the campus before and have even been spotted by workers but there are hundreds of staff at the place and a quick hello and a casual manner assured them I "belonged" there. This leads me to believe that security is either minimal or non-existent. I've never actually spotted any security the couple of times I've walked around on the campus.

So, getting to the actual building isn't a problem. I've not given it a close up inspection but a good explorer can always find a way in.

Anyway, I just wanted to alert you all to the gem that is sitting here in Portage la Prairie just waiting to be infiltrated. It's only a 45-minuted drive from Winnipeg and I'd love to see someone get in and post some photos.

I tried to get in officially by contacting the government and feeding them some bullshit story about wanting to do a photo feature on the building for the newspaper but they shot me down because of "safety concerns," which probably means asbestos.

I don't have much more info on it than that but you can PM me if you want more specific directions to the place. Portage is small and it's easy to find.

It's a safety hazard all right. Much worse than asbestos in there. If you haven't figured that out yet, my advice is to stay away from it.
And yes, it is easy to get into.
