Sending PMs

Possible feature request...

Is there a way to type out the name of the person you want to send a PM to, rather than having to find one of their yellow envelope icons somewhere?

No, I don't think that would be very feasable. People have the ability to change their name on here, so it would probably be a pain in the ass for Av to code something like that.

Good point Jester. I could probably keep my own set of easily accessible bookmarks to the proper posterid's to achieve the same thing.

A lookup seems slightly trivial, but if user B becomes C, and then A becomes B, you might send the (intentionally private) message to "A" instead. Unless names can't be reused, that is.

I've also noticed this problem. All the sudden I'll want to send a message to Krenta, for example. If it's about a post he made, I can just click right there. If it's something random, I have to dig around a bit to find a post of his or forum he moderates or whatnot to get to his profile and click the envelope. This isn't a huge deal or anything, but I see where Arrow is coming from.

Here's an idea: since the people that we want to send these spur of the moment PMs to are usually friends (When was the last time you logged in just to send a PM to someone you don't ever talk to normally?), what about sort of a phonebook. All it would need to be is a database listing for each member of userIDs that are on that person's list. Clicking the "messages" button would lead to the same page as it does now, but there would also be a list of links beneath the usual folder view of the people on your list.

Adding and removing people from the list would be as easy (hard?) as having an "add" button at the bottom of everyone's profile page to add the person's userID to the list. Logic dictates then that next to each PM link on the listing, there would be a little "remove" link to do the opposite.

As this was brewing in my head, I thought a box like is used for private forum user administration would be a good choice, but then you have to wade through every single user of the boards just to find the three people you want on your list. You're already hunting down a post or profile link now, so it makes more sense to use the profile as the point to add people to the list. The whole thing doesn't sound too elaborate even. It's not something that would have to be queried through all the time for updates. It would be for the most part a separate and fairly small database of just a list of several userIDs associated with individual fixed userIDs. The only time it would need to be queried is when a person loads the "messages" page, and then all it's doing is generating a list of normal mailbox-esque links with remove buttons next to them.

Criticism? I just dreamed this up now. Now if only I knew how do this kind of coding...

Thanks Av. I noticed it also has a location search. Now if we could only standardize the way people enter their location. I typed in NY and noticed some people missing...

Edit: Just to clairfy-if I type in NY and New York I get two entirely different lists. If we all had to do it one way, there would only be one list.

Looks good. How about clicking the postcount displays all posts by that user?

I know. I just thought having more connections would be easier on people. Pages on the server seem to load with a bit of lag these days. The fewer clicks required to navigate, the less server load and quicker the browsing is.

well currently the biggest drain on the server are the bloody searches

i'm going to have to re-program it so that it doesn't eat as much resources as it does now.

that should handle most of the lag.
