Washington Irving North

Washington Irving North is on Keystone Lake, near Tulsa. I'm sure the Tulsa-area explorers have covered this spot already, but I had to go back. It was open in the mid-80s -- I kissed my girlfriend for the first time out there -- but it closed sometime in the late 80s or 90s.

It's not even trespassing -- like the signs say, no camping and restricted hunting, but there's even a spot to park. Even the "no camping" restriction can't be enforced too strictly -- you could pull up a boat and camp with no problem, so the restriction is really against *parking* and camping.

Warnings:

* Pictures are with my cell phone camera, so quality may be dicey at best.

* While clamboring down the driftwood, I darn near stepped right in the middle of a coiled-up snake. A big one. I stepped short with my front foot, and launched myself blindly forward with my back foot to throw myself past him. He uncurled, but wasn't provoked (or didn't have time) to strike. I didn't go back to identify the species.

Snakes aside, the spot would be an awesome spot for a Tulsa meetup. Enjoy!

Pretty cool! Not the snake part... but the explore part. I like finding remnant of what used to be there, like piers, stairs, etc.

I was especially curious about what was at the top of the stairs, but going straight up led to nothing but a green mass of poison ivy and brambles. So I went around it, and couldn't find anything but a pile of dirt over a concrete slab. My guess is that it was once a set of drop toilets.

It was on my way back down from there that I encountered my dark brown coily friend. Personally, I like snakes, but I prefer to introduce myself with a bit more tact than with a tennis shoe in the coils.

Is this one of those lack of funding issues? Why did they close the park?
