There are some rappelling setups where if you fuck up, you fall until you recover. Recovering with some setups is hard. More expensive gear tends to make it failure less catastrophic, and easier to recover from. But if you ever grab above your descent anchor you'll always eat dirt.

| | | Even if you don't buy expensive ascending/ rappelling gear and go with a simple set up, the rope is expensive, especially if you're going a long distance.

| | | Not too bad.... I bought this stuff about 15 years ago and I could be totally wrong on the prices, but I don't think they have changed all that much. The climbing gear is where you get expensive. This stuff is bare bones. Repelling rope - about $150-$200 Harness - $100-$150 (maybe less) 1 locking carabiner - about $20 1 figure 8 ring - $30ish ?? A pair of gloves are needed when going fast. Also a pair of balls when you step over the edge! I used to take my friends out to local cliffs and we'd repel all day, fun stuff but that was going fast down rock faces. Using it for UE is probably a slower, more cautious approach.

| | | Those gear prices are high around here. You want education, get a book and some classes. You can get tons of advice, some right, some not so much. It can be hard to tell the difference if you don't know, and you can't fall on the internet.

I agree, it's not too hard, just hard to explain via a forum If you've never done it I'd learn from someone who knows what they're doing. You can't just go into a store to buy all this stuff and get going, you have to know your knots, this is where some textbook or hands on experience with someone helps. The equipment is fine, but if you miss-tie a knot you could be seriously injured or dead. [last edit 4/21/2010 9:34 PM by Jerkabobber - edited 1 times]

| | | I have rappelled for many years. It is a skilled art. If you attempt to tie off an '8' without knowledge you can fall to your death. Might I gently suggest that you join a local climbing gym and get them to show you how to rappel, or take a Top Rope course.

| | | Keep in mind that you can't buy one set of gear for everything either. As an analogy, it's like buying a wardrobe. You can't buy a pair of jeans and expect them to work at a wedding, and slacks are impractical for everyday life. Ideally you have a different harness for caving, climbing, or lineman stuff. UE can be a bit of everything depending on the day. You should decide what sort of structure your rope will be tied to most often and work around that at first. Lots of people have different climbing skills on the forum, take their specialties into account. As an EXAMPLE - If you're into mine exploration or caving pay attention to OpenTrackRacer's posts about techniques and gear. Or, for instance, if you're more of a infiltration climber then Wolfmaan has some excellent advice above. DONT go to a climbing store/department and expect good advice on caving/mining/UE (or vice versa) I've had very knowledgeable people tell me completely the wrong thing - in so far as taking that advice could have killed me. Buy the book "On Rope" and read read read AND find a person to teach you.

| | | As far as mines go, you need to know the Oxygen levels. They become VERY important when you need to get back UP.

| | | Take a repelling/belaying class, there is sure to be one in your area and they are generally pretty cheap or get someone who has done it before to teach you. That way you get hands on experience and advice so you don't make mistakes.

| | | Going down is easy (sometimes too easy). Getting back up can be the hard part! I second the recommendation that you buy and read "On Rope". If you're thinking about exploring mines I also suggest "Alpine Caving Techniques". A local climbing gym can teach you basic techniques. A good starter set is a harness kit from someplace like REI that includes an alpine harness, locking carabiner and an ATC. Just add rope (and a proper anchor) and you're ready to rappel. Just remember, if you have a malfunction while rappelling you have the rest of your life to sort it out. OTR

I'd say the harness can be much cheaper, like 30$. It'll be less comfortable, but for an entry-level setup it works. I'd say practice on steeper and steeper hills and then go for it. Basic rappelling isn't that hard... But make sure you know your anchors, knots, etc before you go for it, those are more likely to kill ya.
