Gastonia, NC locations?
< on 4/18/2010 6:25 PM >

I have driven around Gastonia, where I've heard there are many, many UE sites, but I have not found any. Am I looking in the wrong areas? Anyone have any good locations they can give me for the Gastonia area? Thanks!

Look around for mill towns and drains, you'll find things. Follow the train tracks.

I've been meaning to check out some of those for lease/for sale mills and warehouses.

Careful, if the windows are in good shape, chances are the mills will have cameras and\or alarm system. If the site sports a sign saying for sale, but maintenance clearly hasn't been done (broken windows not replaced) it's definitely worth a shot.

Also renovated mills might not be worth it, because generally they will tear out all the interesting machinery and gut the place before they fix up the windows.

I'm aware of both of these possibilities. I've run into instances of both in the area, which is why they're not really high on my list of things to check out. Still worth a shot though.

Renovated mill rooftops are still fun and are a bit safer than the dilapidated variety.

Bit low for my tastes, but hey, sometimes they keep the water towers.

If your near Gastonia try Blacksburg, Cowpens, and Gaffney SC. Find HWY 29 and roll with it. Plenty to see and do. Sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees.

That's because all we have are gutted mills and factories, maybe an elementary school or two.

If you have to ask, then you have yet to be bitten by said government spider.

Expect a bite within 24 hours. Don't worry, the pain & itching will subside.

No it doesn't. And I'm still claustrophobic inside normal-sized abandonments and buildings.

i know its been 5 months, but i have been to quite a few abandon mills on the south fork catawaba, between gastonia and Lincolnton. High Shoals had one of the best mills but I doubt there is much left, its being dismantled for the old bricks and timbers, such is all the rage for decorating $300,000 homes these days.

So my next pick would be the hydro mill off southfork rd between long shoals and lincolnton @ 35'26'12", -81'14'60". Park across the river at the wildlife acess parking lot, go across the bridge and run down the gravel access so nobody sees ya from the road. If you get in trouble, escape is via the abandon railroad grade which takes you to long shoals behind another mill, which is or was still partially used (as of 4 years ago).

Mill was 100% intact when last visited, several stories tall, and the underside is really neat if you can find it, underneath is a system of drain tunnels made of brick and the remnants of the origional mill dating to the mid 1800s, including the old cast iron gears that drove it.

You can find more abandon hydro-mills or partially abandon mills in the towns of long shoals (beware, generator still in use), Hardins (beware, used for storage), High Shoals (mostly demolished), Lawndale (reused for other manufacturing but now closed again), Double Shoals (beware, town itself is owned by a single family who dont take kindly to strangers poking around).
I know of some more towns between Shelby and Forest City, all of which have hydro powered mills, each town named after one of the daughters of the man who constructed the mills.
The exception is Cliffside, as i doubt he had a daughter named Cliff....or did he?
Henrietta, Caroleen, Avondale and there is one more but i forget the name.
All three towns are within a mile of each other on what i think is a fork of the broad river.

I havent been to all of these mills, and if it appears at all used for anything my advice be stay the hell away unless you are good at not getting caught, and then i still would stay out of the buildings as they likely have alarms.

The nightmare corpse-city of R'lyeh…was built in measureless eons behind history by the vast, loathsome shapes that seeped down from the dark stars. There lay great Cthulhu and his hordes, hidden in green slimy vaults.
