those were like most other cars from the early 70's; rotted out right on the showroom floor.

I have to give you rust belt guys credit, you put up with some shit. I still see those around here, as daily beaters no less. It takes balls and $$$$ to be a car guy in the rust belt.

most of the restored cars you see here in New York, Vermont and New Hampshire came from down south. My cousin Rob had to go all the way to North Carolina for his Nova SS. i looked at a 78 Nova down the street from me... 57,000 miles. The subframes are iffy, the floorpan is yikes and the front fenders flap in a stiff breeze...

Damn. I'm helpin my buddy restore a 72 Nova 2door that was totally solid and ran and drove. Had to replace the trunk pan but that's all the rust we could find. And I beat the seller down from $2500 to $1500 and still think my buddy paid too much.

| | | Kind of odd, I just drove down to FL and back a couple of weeks ago. While I did see a few old cars, I was kind of shocked, I was fully expecting to see old cars all over the place. Instead I mostly saw very crappy 5 year old run of the mill cars with severely sun-damaged paint, cracked vinyl tops, and yellowed headlight lenses. I did see things like a lot of rust free 1980s and 90s Broncos which are getting scarce around my parts. My old Impala is a native New England car from western MA (It was built at the Tarrytown NY plant), and is surprisingly solid and rust free, ironically. Says a lot for the people buying the optional undercoating at the dealer, the whole frame and floorpans are still black and haven't been touched up.

with those old Impalas, they had TWO problem rust areas on their frames... right by the axle kickup and where the control arm mounts to the frame.

Old cars and old junkyards, in the South, are becoming fairly scarce. They still exist, but you have to search the back roads for them.

| | | 78 or so Pontiac LeMans... there were so many variants to that car. Some were called Grand Ams, some were called LeMans. All it was was that years' Chevy Malibu. There weren't a bad car, but did share the same frame rot issues as the rest of the B(?) and G(?) body.

Do not proffer sympathy to the mentally ill. Tell them firmly "I am not paid to listen to this drivel. You are a terminal fool". |

| | | During my wandering of hills and trails in southern Cali and Tejas I've seen many bodies of cars from the 20's-40's strewn about in surprisingly solid condition. Nothing truly usable but you can still easily tell what make and model they were

It's really discouraging when I visit the south and see VWs in the junkyard in 20 times better condition than ones I've spent countless hours and dollars restoring. Don't get me wrong, I love doing it, but damn it'd be nice to NOT have to do any rust repairs! (I do have a california shell which is next in line for resto... I cannot WAIT to start on it!)

that's the way my Daytona was that I had in tennessee... there was absolutely NO rust on the car anywhere... there were cars in salvage yards all over the place that had perfect bodies but blown engines and transmissions (it's the heat that killed them all).
