Any other prisons like this in your area?

The St. Cloud, MN prison which I live close to was build in 1889. It features a rather unique "castle" look to it. I was wondering if there are any other prisons build around the same time with the same architecture.

I'll post some pictures, just have to re-size them.

Not in the Great Lakes, but that looks quite similar to this one, built in the 1830's.

I don't have a picture handy, but the Illinois State Prison in Joliet looks quite a bit like a castle and is abandoned.

And it's famous as the Blues Brothers prison (it's where Joliet Jake was serving time and he's released from it at the beginning of the movie). Here's some video (mostly of still photos) from what appears to be a crazy Eastern European person.

I'm from St. Cloud. My grandparents and aunt and uncle got to go on the only public tour they had I think back in the nineties. It's still active and I heard my grandma hugged her purse tightly the entire time.

I know there WAS one in Stillwater that could be explored. I'm pretty sure Danarchy explored it.

A few years ago, I went there with some friends and we drove around a bit looking. Somebody at that time said that the place had been torn down to make room for either yuppie condos or else McMansions. I can't confirm that.

I did go to Stillwater several weeks ago and drove around looking for the prison, figuring I could at least find ruins or a foundation or something. The problem of course was that I didn't know where to look and naturally I found nothing.

So I'm still interested in information if anybody has it, but I think the place is long since torn down.

There was an old prison in Stillwater, but I think it vanished a long long time ago. I'm pretty sure that the thing my friends and I explored was the twine factory which had been part of it (I think they had the prisoners making twine). The twine factory burned to the ground after some idiot kids went in looking for evidence of Satanists.

http://news.minnes.../04_ap_prisonfire/

I was there just a week or two beforehand. I may very well have the last photos of insides of the building.

Yes, but mostly on the outside only a few peeks on the inside. I've talked to a lot of people who worked or served time there though. They didn't like it.

Yeah, apparently the conditions inside were terrible.

Wish I could dig up at least some old photos of it...
