Ohio Asylums...

Hey, I'm organizing a road trip with some of my friends and was planning a route, was curious if anybody has been to, and/or knew if any of these stops were worth it in Ohio...

1) Lima State Hospital

2) Athens State Hospital

3) Dayton State Hospital

I also was thinking about checking out Mansfield Penitentiary which they say is "haunted" ... any suggestions...

Thanks in advance for any help!

Mansfield is active, as it is owned by the local historical society. They have tours and "ghost hunts" that you can pay to go on last I heard. I doubt that security will be easy to circumvent and infiltrate, even at night. Never been there myself though, so don't hold me to all that. All just theory.

is the Lima state hospital that one that's back in the woods of Shawnee where they treated TB patients or are you talking about a different one?

The one in Dayton is quite active. It is a nursing home or something now.

Yes you all appear to be right, I think Lima state hospital is also in use now. Any suggestions in Ohio? Athens Kirkbride seems to be partially in use, partially abandoned.

There is one building on the grounds that is still empty, the rest are active. The main building is now the Kennedy Museum of American Art, which is worth a trip itself. When were you planning on going? I was planning on heading to the Athens area myself next month. PM me if you don't feel comfortable answering here.

Lima has a TB hospital that most people are familiar with (not worth going to), and a Gothic-revival asylum that was converted into a prison. Although the prison briefly closed, it was reopened due to overcrowding conditions at the adjoining complex.

Mansfield is not a possibility. Guards are all around it. Don't know about the rest sorry. Mansfield does do tours though.

Athens is partially abandoned but it is extremely difficult to access. They will call the police on you if you get caught, too.

Lima I believe is being used again, but I'm not 100% sure on that. I do know that its a huge place.

Also, the people at the kirkbride in Dayton are not particularly friendly.

Lima looks like the building itself is disused, but practically everything around it seems to be in use (as an active prison).

Nice Map! thanks, Yes, that seems a little risky, but what would some urban exploration be without some ninja skills.

Yes, the big circular building is what I'm referring to.

Also, fwiw I believe the whole facility only has about 120 inmates and the central building is not used at all.

Are any of these Ohio asylums haunted?

There's really only one way to out...and its not by watchings TAPS.

It looks like a pretty big building to explore, but it also looks like there might have to be some fence hopping

Athens has that reputation, and there is the "stain." The stain is the imprint of a woman who escaped from the asylum... in the '60s, I think, snuck into an unused building, took off her clothes (!) laid down and died. She laid there for a while before she was found, and her... "fluids" made a lasting stain on the floor. It's passed into Athens Legend, but it's real. I've seen it, and it's creepy as hell. If the asylum doesn't satisfy your haunting jones, the rest of the area is f'ed up enough to satisfy it.

That sounds like reason enough to visit Athens. Did someone get pics of that infamous stain?

Athens, you can go see the museum in admin but thats all you are going to see with the kirk. You can go uptop the hill and see the very small TB building. The one set of wards is being used by OSU with their graduate student's having studios inside them. which so happens to be the same side the stain is on. the stain is locked up behind a freshly built walk with a door, locked.(from what we could find) the rest of the wards are sealed up EXTREMELY tight. I wouldn't suggest trying to get in.

I looked at Lima once, but was detered to find the big connected buildings are now used as a prison.

And Dayton is now a nursing home, here is the website http://www.10wilmingtonplace.com/ maybe you can contact them but as someone said here already they aren't very friendly.

I've been in both wards in Athens. Both are very difficult to access and not worth it imo. When I went the stain was easy to access, but its at the top floor of the very last ward, so it can be easily locked. However, it can be accessed through the attic. I would not recommend attempting to gain access to the ridges. It is a popular place for trespassers and is patrolled very regularly by police. The female wards are alarmed now as well.

The staff at 10 Wilmington Place will kick you out if they see you taking photos. Speaking from experience.
