This is just a suggestion: If anyone knows where the Atlas Steel factory is in East Welland (it's near Central Music if I remember correctly) it could make a good UE-Location (assuming it's still abandoned and hasn't been put back to use like the Stelco factory has). I think it's at least worth scoping it out to see the situation.

Sounds like a good idea

since your in Welland, why don't you have a peek?

I was thinking about it. I was wondering if anyone else wanted to join (it's okay if you don't want to out of distrust, I am a new member).

Assuming you were able to do some preliminary scouting to confirm that it is indeed abandoned, Id love to check it out.
Kind of a far drive to possibly discover its still active :p

I'll check it out when I get the chance which should be within the week. Also, I haven't done any preliminary scouting recently, I'm just going on what I remembered before I moved away from Ontario (I recently moved back). I know it used to be abandoned and knowing Welland, it probably still is abandoned. But I'll check it out and report back.

Another location to keep an eye is the John Deere plant (in South Welland -- Dain City). It recently shut down (At the beginning of 2010) and there is almost no one there during the day with the exception of the Plant-office. It might be worth checking out in the near future before it gets bought by someone else and is put back to full use.

It is a far drive (especially for me since I'm close to Port Colborne). I'll check it out when I get the chance which should be within the week. Just a little friendly warning.... The old Atlas Steel property is now occupied by a few different owners. The majority of the plant has 2 guards 24/7 with near constant patrols and due to recent activity the police get called at the first sight of intruders. Another building on the property is guarded by the owner who lives in part of the building and he is constantly on the lookout for intruders. He is a bit of a nutjob so you might want to be very careful with that one. As for John Deere, they also have 2 guards 24/7 and enough cameras to cover the entire property, so that one might be pretty tough.

It sounds like you've done a bit of scouting around these places.

I wouldn't have thought Atlas Steel was still under relatively heavy surveillance seeing as they shutdown quite a while ago.

They are definitely both challenging. They'd be the most challenging explorations in my experience if I decide to attempt them. Obviously, I'll have to do *a lot* of observing on either property to even get a chance to get on premises. It probably won't be worth considering I'll be worrying about getting caught all the time, but it's at least worth an attempt.

Sounds like they want to keep their assets from depreciating while the facility is closed. I guess the bigger companies like Deere can afford to keep a few security staff at mothballed buildings.

Keep it fuzzy.

@Kairu
The Atlas Steel site is owned by MMFX Steel of Canada Inc. Also on the property is Salit Steel; Hodgson Custom Metals (I think that's the right name, I'd have to drive by and double check for sure. I never really paid too much attention to the name); a place that makes windows; and a new owner for the former office buildings, which are being refurbished.
While MMFX Steel is currently on shut down, there are security cameras everywhere and security does patrol the plant. I work a couple of blocks away from the place and have checked various entry points along one area and have noticed newer cameras and have seen security actually patrol.

As for John Deere - sooooo many cameras it's not funny. And the plant is still active with workers clearing out the last bit of product. Security is there 24/7 - I pass the plant almost every day. The plant should be shuttered for good very soon, but I am sure security will be active for a while.

If you look in the Atlas Steel area, you'll find some other places to explore. Though they aren't that exciting anymore.

I thank you very much for your information. You just saved me a bit of time that it would've taken to figure out on my own. It seems that these are definitely not the best times to attempt these.. without getting caught/seen. I had a feeling the John Deere plant would be next to impossible to infiltrate but I'll keep an eye on it anyway. I noticed a few parts of the John Deere plant have been boarded up and that some of the doors are being kept open. As for Atlas Steel, I must admit I'm a little disappointed that it's still well guarded. Although (as you said), there are other buildings around there that are explorable.. just not quite as enticing. But if they haven't been added to the Location-Database, it might be worth some time to go exploring through them while getting some pictures.

There are plenty of locations in the LDB that are hidden to basic members, and in order for them to be seen you need to achieve full member status

Most of the locations you would see in the LDB with basic member status are either demolished or well-explored.

Really? That's interesting. Well, that's just another reason to become a Full Member.

Either way, I'll just keep an eye for other potential locations and hopefully they'll be more explorable than Atlas Steel.

These are some great pictures Inebriatedas. I mean, they give a good idea of the size of the place. I had forgotten how big it was. It looks fairly interesting inside. I was expecting the place to be cleaned out (or at least cleaned up). Of course it could look very different, now. I'm assuming you took these photos, right? Was the security as bad at that time as it is now?

I was in it about three years ago, and yes - it exists in the DB already although to protect it from vandals, rave-planners and the like - it is indeed locked only to full members. (If you get the chance, come out to a meet - fastest route to Full Membership once some people get to spend an afternoon sizing you up)

It's fairly predictable, it has your basic crumbling industrial basements...

...your ominously abandoned machinery...

...your carelessly discarded financial records and employee files...

...your employees' sunshine girl wall...

...your dizzying heights atop sketchy ladders...

and best of all...your crappy amateur attempts to create "artistic photography" that totally fail due to being a jerkoff with a camera but no knowledge about depths of field or focus.

When I took these the security was mostly crap, old fart Group 4 Security who were clueless as well as useless (also at that time the plant was working 2 shifts, days and afternoons, melting and shipping steel billets. Group 4 covered nights and weekends). Group 4 is now gone and the plant is now guarded by MMFX employees who are a lot more serious about their Plants protection in hope of running again soon.

That is understandable seeing as that structure is already in bad enough condition anyway. I was going to attend the most recent meet in Toronto but I had other plans -- I will go next month, though.

Although it is just another abandoned factory (fairly conventional abandoned factory at that), it'd still be an experience to explore it (albeit fun). Of course with current security, it would just be a waste of time to go there now.

Oh well, there are lots of other abandoned structures around here. It's just a matter of (for me, anyway) remembering them.

Wish I had spotted this thread sooner. I'm a native Wellander myself and have been eying these two buildings for quite some time. Always figured there was security there though. I did recently discover a collapsed building right by Atlas, didn't have a camera at the time but I'll probably go back in the next week or two to snap some pics. There wasn't much to see there though. In any case, I'm dying to get into Atlas but not stupid enough to try it, especially considering what I know now.

There are also some other spots in Welland I'd love to check out. Just spotted two abandoned houses this weekend that I'll be scoping out some more soon, possibly this weekend. Then there's the old highschool which is beckoning me, but I've heard that one is used by police for training exercises and has active security as well

But if anyone else from Welland or the surrounding area wants to do some exploring just let me know, I'm always up for it on the weekends

I explored Atlas solo, years ago on a winter day... around 2005-2006 if I remember right. That was right around the period when it had actually been abandoned for some time, and was right around the buyout by MMFX (Who I believe still own it? At least partially). This was also before the buildings, mainly the huge, enormously long Main Street facing building, were demolished.

Even at this point security was fully staffed and they actually patrolled in trucks and manned every gate. I actually talked with one of the guards afterward, posing as a curious passerby, and his reason for the large amount of security was the scrappers... apparently not long before I was there, a scrapper nearly died after trying to harvest a rather large and very live electrical wire. Durrr. This in turn also greatly reduced pretty much any easy access points to the worthwhile sections as they began actually welding entrances shut.

The entire plant was gutted, except for the melt shop, which was amazingly still fully intact, like everyone had been working one day and just vanished. It was awesome. This is one of the buildings that still stands - the one furthest from main street at the very back of the lot. If you drive down River Rd, past the Lions Club, you can see it in the distance. When I was there, all the machinery, huge kettles, tools, books, big silver fire suits, fully stocked rooms, everything - were all still in there. There was a train, too, even!

I believe every building remaining is now active.

Some photos:

By all means, feel free to drop me a line if you'd like any more info!
