What's that? A department store?!

Yes! I have returned! I'm sure at least one person missed me! However, this time I have much more than just some boring old houses. This time, I have a department store!

First off - a history lesson. This store was started in 1899 and eventually closed in 1986. It has many unique features that still stand alone in Alabama, even to this day. I can't really say much more without giving it away. Come to think of it, I've said too much. Keep calm and carry on.

So anyway, fast-forward to 2010. My friend and I decided that we must get into this building after hearing so much about it from a person who is old enough to have actually gone into the building during its heyday. So we set out with a mission. Our initial idea for getting in was thwarted by a welded-shut vent. Curses!

Almost ready to give up, we decided to try to gain entrance an entirely different way, which turned out to be the entirely correct way. We were in!

What is that? A light? It turns out, this place is being renovated. This won't be a feasible trip before too long!

Check out the escalators, though!

After scoping out this floor for a few minutes, we decided to see what was upstairs. It was lovely - untouched by the cleaning crews. It's amazing what 24 years can do to a wall.

Taking a turn to the right, we were confronted with a perfect view of the old hotel, which isn't really clearly portrayed in this picture:

We then proceeded to the bathrooms. I mean, it's necessary, right? Well, I didn't take any pictures in the bathroom, but instead I took a few in the room leading to the bathroom. Needless to say, gravity has taken its toll on the paint on the ceiling..

Oh, and before I forget, it was REALLY dark on this floor. Try this 30-second exposure on for size, regardless of how dirty that may have sounded:

Also, it's worth mentioning that I finally came across an animal skeleton whilst exploring. I present to you a headless bird!

That's all for now. It's 2 in the morning and I want to sleep. Hope you enjoyed it!

You guys rock.
You guys rock.
You guys rock.
You guys rock.

+12 ninja points for this one for both of you.

I totally regret not coming, but I did get many responsible things done at home. I read some articles last night about the place. Although it was supposed to open like 8 years ago, I think they are more serious about starting the project this year.

Send me details!

Woah. Excellent find. What a beautiful building, and how beautifully it has decayed. Epic win for you.

Personally, I don't risk felonies when I explore, but this place looks so beautiful.

It's a construction site, so it's a felony.

EDIT: Sorry, I noticed this was not in the state of Florida. In the state of Florida it is a felony to trespass on a construction site.

Made another trip back to the store today. This time, it lasted a little longer. However, I just have a few pictures to share at the moment.

The employee areas of the store are just plain creepy these days. I love it.

However, the restrooms are still beautiful. I never thought I'd call a restroom beautiful..

And the floors that HAVE been cleaned by the renovators are pretty lovely, as well.

It's hard to think that just above this lovely little clean room lies a room in this much ruin:

I guess someone had some work to do in the ruined room, though..

And as a bonus, a catalog!
