Candian Domain Ride Toronto Zoo (Monorail)

These are some shots of the abandoned monorail, (Canadian Domain Ride - or AGT "Automated Guideway Transit), owned and built(1974) by the Toronto Zoo in the Rouge Valley. In 1994 a train lost power, rolled back downhill and crashed into another train that was loading and off-loading passengers. In which this case there was a law-suite and the monorail is no longer in use. There are no plans as of yet on what they are going to do with the remains of the monorail, the Toronto Zoo has just left the monorail to decay in the Rouge Valley. I would have to say there is at least 90% of the structure that still stands to this date, standing strong, un-vandalized, and full of vegetation, especially in the summer months. Just completely beautiful to explore. The monorail enters the Zoo property on the north side of the Rouge River at the East and West ends of the Zoo. It passes over a service road, then leads right into the Zoo where ppl will be looking at live animals and possibly see you walking on the monorail, saying "OMG! There's someone over there!, where the animals are!" LoL makes for a great experience though that's for sure. How many UER members have explored the monorail b4?

Been there done that. I may be the only one that has been there legally. It helps when your uncle is the Senior Site Engineer for the Zoo. LoL! I have pictures diagrams, and heck the official reports. One thing that is missing from here, is that there has been three accidents. Two have been publicly reported, but the third not. The second one is actually where one of the zoo's animals escaped and got onto the track system and got hit by the train, and damaging it. The train system was designed in a way were if it detected something in front of it, it should slow down and stop till its right of way was not disrupted. The third and final accident is where they tried to bring the monorail back online, and thus it crashed again, severly damaging both trains. Fortunately it was a test run and no one was on the train except the operators. It proved too costly to replace the damage monorail trains and to correct the problem. Thus the zoo decided to stick with the tractor pull ride instead. It was more cost effective. The monorail line whatever is left of it will sit there. The electrical wiring mostly removed. The cement structures are left there, due to the cost of removal was not good. The remaining monorail stations were converted to storage areas or resued as stops. I have the remaining picture of the monorail zoo train. Only remaining one, which you wont find anywhere. :)

This has should been posted already, if I posted the same pictures. I am sorry.

It was actually made by Bendix-Dashaveyor an american company. If one can recall, most recently, Disney World had an accident a few months ago.

Awsome picture! Hey did anyone get a chance to explore it, perhaps I can ask my uncle if we can do it legally. I know, I know it may spoil the fun.

I remember that train as well, it was awsome. Actually I took the gf there 2 or 3 years ago and was looking for it and where I had to get the pass but we decided it would be healthier to walk around the place instead. Had no idea it was taken out of commission.

Great pics, great memories

I went on it a few times as a kid. I think the train ride was a lot more fun then anything you could see. Most of the time you would just go past trees and empty animal areas. When you did see an animal it would be off in the distance, the train driver would announce it and everyone would peer over to look. The most exciting part IIRC was the timber wolves: You would go right over their enclosure. They would be in their dens, but everyone would look over anyway, I would look down hoping they might poke their nose out, but never got to see them any of the times I went on the ride. I don't even think they stopped it at the interesting parts :/

The train was really cool and futuristic looking, I really liked how the doors opened.

Yeah definitely not a monorail. likewise with what you said "l333t". More of an AGT(Automated Guideway Transit)

I completely forgot this thing existed! And yeah, as a kid this was the coolest thing about the zoo, aside from the animals (I loved the rhinos!).
I would definitely love to explore the entire thing!

Wow... croaked! Sad.

I remember exploring it when it was still under construction. My friend and I walked along sections of it we could access... Some of it over the wolf enclosure (as far as I remember, and confirmed in a post above) which was a bit scary. Wouldn't want to fall off there. The track section just kinda stopped at one point because it was not completed.

The weather was really hot at the time and we were too exhausted to walk the entire length. That was one of the bad things about this place. Hard to find shade.

Subsequently I visited the zoo so rarely that I don't even recall having used the mono-rail. Perhaps it was too expensive, or was its price included?

The Canadian Domain ride was expensive actually. The cost of the ride didnt include the entry fee. It was a seperate price.

If I remember correctly, Adults were 16.00, and Children were 8.00, Babies were free. Students and Seniors were $10.00 The main station is where you presently board the tractor ride thing, or where the strollers and restaurant was stored.

One thing I dont like is the disssaperance of McDonalds in the Zoo. They had a commanding presence.

The one I remember was near the main entrance, by a bird exhibit. And they couldn't give out straws or lids in order to protect the animals.

Those shots remind me of the latter two Jurassic Park movies. Where everything was abandoned and nature was taking over again.

I remember going roughly 10 years ago on a hot sunny day, the McD's was packed and we had to eat outside.

Yeah if this train is still in existence, then I would love to find out where it tucked away. Actually come to think of it I do remember seeing the two trains that collided sitting on the property where the "Red Barn" is. Can be seen from the east side of Meadowvale rd, across from the Toronto Zoo. I think the Zoo uses the barn for something but I'm not too sure for what though.
