| | | Not in Boston proper, but real close:
And a bit of a ways inside:
A full write-up will come when I explore the whole thing and take some more pictures. I just figured the board was quiet enough that no one would mind a superfluous post like this. But in short, here are some things I've learned:
- Holy shit; waders actually work.
So draining in winter is (apparently) no problem at all. [withdrawn]
- Maps aren't always right, thankfully.
- Drains are really hard to take pictures of.
- But if you're going to try anyway, tripods are THE BEST.

| | | Nice, I had been looking for some good traditional outfalls - most of them were submerged outfalls though. Thats pretty cool, you should explore it all, map it maybe.

I'm sad I'm not there anymore to be part of it. I'll be back monday for a week so if anyone has any time I'd love to go check some out.

| | | Nice! Looks like it floods a bit with all the crap caught on the wall, watch out for the snow next week if you go again. Think you could take a kayak into it? I've taken mine in the drain we have here all the way up until the water got only a couple inches deep at the infall.

Yeah! It sucks! Do you have any idea how much drains rise up (and become navigable) beyond submerged outfalls? I imagine a drain which was completely full of water wouldn't do much good, you know, as a drain. But I dunno.

Haha, I conveniently left off anything which would suggest scale from the second photo. The tunnel is around six feet tall. The water at the bottom goes up mid-calf or so (although it's deeper elsewhere). Not much of a use for boats in these humble parts. [last edit 2/6/2010 12:05 AM by jjbigups - edited 1 times]

| | | So I checked out this other outflow in Boston tonight. Tunnel was bigger, water was deeper, but it was a tease! ...for there was nothing to see at the end but a sad little ~2ft pipe. And the place was fucking cold. The water was covered by a fairly thick layer of ice which I had to break up with my tripod as I went along. I managed to get my gloves wet, and my gloves suck, so that wasn't great. In general, the water was much colder than the previous drain's... winter was not ignorable at all. Tunnel, looking back toward outflow:
Sad little pipe:
Wish I'd taken a picture of the fish which was flopping around on top of the ice before I freed it. (How'd it get there?)

In my experience, that's less the case with drains as they get further from the outfall. A drain being underground, they tend to pick up the temperature from the surrounding earth. The deeper they are and the less airflow there is from the outside, the closer you're going to be to ~50ish degrees and no ice.

Oh, and I also second what makman is saying. The more you delve underground, the more tepid the water becomes.

| | | Wind is worse on your body than temperature (more so when doing up high stuff) I'll take 10*F with no wind over 30*F and 30MPH winds. Drains aren't windy, and if you're going through one and suddenly feel gusty wind that means it's time to get the fuck outta there because there's a good chance that rapidly rising water is displacing the air and it's a warning sign of flash flooding. I don't see how drains "improve" in the winter, (maybe the few that ice over and make pretty pictures) but they are certainly more hospitable than other types of activities..

Ditto! I'm passing through about a week from now, and will have a bit of a tight schedule, but I am hoping to continue exploring an infall that I started scouting years ago. I've heard from one of you on this thread that it gets pretty huge ;) PM if you're interested in meeting up.
