|  | | | I received an interesting email from a Basic Member regarding his close encounter with feral hogs at the old Lion Country Safari / International Wildlife Park and have posted it as a story in the UEDB location entry.
Yes Virgina there are increasing numbers of feral hogs in the Trinity River bottoms and many other heavily wooded and brushy areas of urban North Texas.
Just a matter of time before they be rootin up the lawn at Old City Park.
Weaseldog, feel free to jump in the forums man. Glad your dog is not hurt too badly those hawgs can and do kill much larger dogs than yours. Guys that hunt them with dogs for sport have taken to outfitting their "hold dogs" with flak vest type body armor to keep them from gettin all slashed up.

So I vote #1: set up a barbeque grill at the corner of Hard Rock Rd and Wildlife Rd, and bring lots of charcoal.
Barry, I suspect the Nokia folks didn't kill them all... just the dumb ones. The smart ones are still out there waiting for us to outsmart them.

there was a episode of Monster Quest which is a pretty lame show but it showed their current range on a map
some other interesting notes are they appear from all appearances to be de-evolving, reverting back to their wild boar genes with humped back longer snout and theyve been running loose for more than 250 years
the flavor of wild hog meat depends a lot on age and what theyve been eating it can vary from tough and malodorous to comparable with lean farm raised pork. obviously ferals are much leaner than their pen raised cousins. theyre omnivorous will eat nearly anyything commonly reach 450lbs but much larger ones have been taken
craigslist has guided and semi guided hunts advertised from $50 to $500 one guy was offering hunts with dogs where the client has only a large knife for the kill (Id like to see some of those real Texas hunters that sit in a stand over a feeder go hand to hand with a 450lb boar)
Ive even read of ranchers paying hunters to come in and wipe them out (nearly impossible) because of their destructive feeding behavior

They are mean. Very mean. They can do a lot of harm to people, property, and dogs. It's not like running up on a lil ole' possum. Some of them can be bad news.
One of the hogs we had penned up, when we went out to kill them, he charged the pen (made of iron pipe) so hard that he broke his jaw bone. Another one did the same thing and hit it so hard that he died. Seriously.
If they hit a person (and that was their intent) then they would have done a lot of damage. They're mean. Period. They need to be kept to manageable levels so I have no problem with people killing them, especially if you put his ass on the bbq, throw on some chemicals, and have a feast for a few weeks.

We used to hand gun hunt them. I carried my Hipower with Black Talons and a handful of 25 round mags. Worked quite well, as 9mm is a notorious over-penetrator. Had a buddy that liked .357 mag instead. Fine round, but only 6 shots in the middle of a mess of pigs? Not for me.
We have a boat load in my part of New Mexico as well. My cousin Rick got a 500 pounder about a month ago while calling coyotes. .243 was not quite enough round, but he got it done.
I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

Most Texas hunting seasons are closed, but the season never ends on feral hogs. The abundant hogs are a mixed blessing – a challenging game animal that yields tasty pork but a pest that causes millions of dollars worth of damage to farm and ranchlands and competes with native wildlife.
A group called Blue Collar Bowhunter is hosting its second annual Texas Big Nasty Hog Contest from Feb. 6-March 8. The entry fee is $100 per two-person team, and the contest pays back 100 percent of the entry money in prizes. Last year, nearly $10,000 worth of prizes went to the winning teams.
Contest rules and other details are available at www.texasbignastyhogcontest.com, or you can call 903-767-9618. There are prizes for best video, most hogs, longest tusks and heaviest single hog. Opening ceremonies and final registration for the contest is Feb. 6 at Pine Forest Community Center east of Sulphur Springs. There's a map on the Web site.

I'm all for eating pork.
Thor is recovering nicely. He's being very good about letting me dress the wound and it's closing up without any problems. The bite went all the way to the bone. Luckily, no tendons or ligaments were severed.
After thinking about the order of events, I think Thor just ran up to the hog, to sniff butts and make friends. He's learned an important lesson.
I'll have to be careful taking both dogs out now that they know the scent. In spite of his injury, Thor seemed to have had a great time.
