we all know the dead factories, the dying factory towns. but what was it really like back when the industrial revolution was just reaching its peak? what was it like 98 years ago?

the story:
about five years ago, i had some ue steel-mill photos in a gallery. at the opening, i talked with a retired steel-industry engineer. he took my card. two days later he called me and told me he had something i would like to see, so i arranged to meet him. he had a large brown envelope with only a date on it: 1912. apparently, the engineer's grandfather was a steelworker at krupps stahlwerks in essen, germany and the envelope was his retirement gift.

it contained 15 full-color prints derived from paintings of life in and around the krupps steel mills back in the early 1900s. an examination of the prints revealed the signature of otto bollhagen (1861-1924) - who i later learned was a noted german industrial artist.

the engineer explained that the envelope had just sat in his attic for decades - and he wanted me to have it. he said i would probably be a better guardian of it than anyone else he knew. i accepted with the intention of scanning the prints for the world to see, but the prints were too large for my flatbed scanner and an exploratory trip to kinkos put a $300 price tag on getting them scanned. so they sat in my attic until i found an affordable way to scan them.

so now, a uer exclusive: for the first time ever on the internet, i present to you the amazing artwork of krupps stahlwerks ca. 1912 - enjoy!

1. krupps essen steelworks, 1912 (tri-fold)

2. krupps essen steelworks (detail)

3. krupps magdeburg steelworks

4. krupps essen steelworks plant entrance (with statue of alfred krupp)

5. mechanical workshop (exterior), essen

6. mechanical workshop (interior), essen

7. pressing plant no.2 (exterior), essen

8. pressing plant no.2 (interior), essen

9. open hearth plant no.5, essen

10. open hearth/castings foundry no.6, essen

11. rail rolling mill, essen

12. stammhaus, essen

13. chemical laboratory, essen

14. administration building, essen

15. steel foundry, magdeburg

16. crucible steel foundry, essen

17. crucible steel foundry, essen (detail)

most of the buildings depicted above were destroyed in WWII, but krupps rebuilt. yet for various reasons, scenes like these have now virtually disappeared in the western hemisphere; leaving us here to scratch through the rubble.

By the way, do we know the current status of this plant? I can't imagine it could still be in use, but is it still standing and abandoned, or is it long gone?

first, thank you for the kind comments. it is a pleasure to share these images here.

the krupps steel mill in essen was basically leveled in WWII:

(toppled statue of alfred krupp 1, toppled statue of alfred krupp 2 - see 4th image in original post)
but it was rebuilt and, for a while, its former glory was restored. but, just like in the US, far eastern steel markets began to outcompete the steel markets in the west and the plants in germany started to close. in 1978, krupp was folded into the huge german conglomerate thyssenkrupp. still, the german steel market was shrinking fast (this interesting story really illustrates that point).

today, thyssenkrupp still makes steel in essen - but on a much smaller scale. just like in the US, the people searched for ways to repurpose the miles of dead mills, with some interesting results:

(google zollverein to see more)

very few of the strucures from 1912 still exist. the krupps admin building did survive and is now the mövenpick hotel essen

the statue of alfred krupp was restored and resurrected again in essen:
