But really if you're worrying about homeless just keep your eyes/ears open and be aware of signs that indicate someone is living somewhere or that there are other people in the building with you. Be quiet. Pay attention to where you came in, how to get back there, alternative exits....once you get inside don't forget about everything else and drop all your stuff pull out all your equipment and forget your environment.
I am very small, look VERY young, and i often explore alone in places I shouldn't but i am aware of that and dress, look, and carry myself a certain way. When it comes to weapons I only pick up something that will allow me distance that i could swing (a board, a pipe) and would not ever swing it unless running was not an option and i was confident I could lay the person out with it. Im not gonna pretend like i could survive a knife fight at 5'1" 115lbs with a dude.... but i feel much better with a lead pipe than a little can of pepper spray.

My friend's college town. We actually got checked out by these guys two weeks ago but the two cruisers sitting up the road dissuaded them from fucking with us.

Can't carry guns on campus. Been looking for a small can of wasp spray, though.
One eyewitness report said they had a sawed off shotgun not pistol, I doubt the inebriated college victim would have been able to tell the difference.
When we were "approached" a few weeks prior it went like this

They drove up to the DK, saw the two cruisers sitting in the parking lot drove back down towards us but keep going.

It wasn't possible for them to box us in on main street and I know you can't always prevent a crime but if you can do something to prevent the criminals from making a clean getaway it's almost as good.
