MTU

Has anyone here done any exploring at MTU in Houghton? It's been a long time since I've been there, but I'm in the process of scanning in all of my photos while I lived there. I remember there were a number of good targets including the steam tunnels, the secret ancient steam tunnel, the pool in the basement of Walker, and the sub basement of Fisher hall. I tried for 3 years to get into these places with no success. Then on my last year I went on an exploring rampage and hit all of them (sometimes after pitchers at JD's), including some roofs, the sub basement of Wads, and some other miscellaneous places.

I also checked out some Copper Mines there. Me and my friends had one big scare when we found an access point where a stope had broken through to the surface. We climbed down, and explored for a while. Then when we tried to come back out, we found a little pile of dirt on the floor underneath where our exit should have been, but wasn't. After almost having a heart attack at the thought of our exit caving in while we where inside, we discovered we were just lost and had come back up in wrong place.

Here are some steam tunnel pics. I'll post pics of the other places when get the negatives scanned. I'd love to hear from other people about their experiences exploring on campus.

I never did too much ON campus, but I was in the steam tunnels once.

I spent most of my time in the mining relics and in mines. Copper Falls was my favorite, although getting in was always a freaky experience.

When were you up there???

Let's just say its been a long time since I've been there.

Regarding the sub basement of Fisher Hall...

There are always a lot of rumors about the sub basement of Fisher. The best I've heard was that someone saw some military guys push a cart which appeared to have an alien body under a tarp, into the elevator and down to the subbasement.

The subbasement is one of the easier targets on campus. Once you get down the stairs, there's a little landing that meets up with the elevator. Next to that is a large mechanical room/workshop. This is pretty much the extent of the full sized subbasement. Surrounding the mechanical room, and under the rest of the building is mostly crawl space areas with pipes (see pictures) and short little midget doors that connect to both sides of the mechanical room.

There are some other miscellaneous crawl spaces underneath the lecture halls, but they don't seem to be connected to the sub basement.

I never found aliens though, unless the elevator goes down one more level...

I never really explored MTU, I was only there for summer camp. I spent more time exploring mine sites with my cousin. The only open shafts I know of have been closed for 15+ years.

The last shaft that I could "easily" get in was blasted shut in '97 or '98. There are a few others which could probably still be entered, but would entail some serious work to get in - I wasn't prepared for that last time I was there.

Ok, 20 points for whoever can figure out where this tunnel is.

Hint: It was once mentioned on alt.college.tunnels. When I was a student I went down to the basement of the EERC and requested that news.mtu.edu started carrying alt.college.tunnels. I remember getting a weird look, then a shrug, and a "whatever". After reading a post about it, it took me over a year and several failed attempts to get in.

It is on campus, near some older buildings, but it is *not* part of the main steam tunnel system. I only found one of these tunnels, although I suspect some more are around somewhere... Anybody?

At the bottom of Lot 10, behind the cute little beach on the canal, there used to be a large (maybe two) RCP drain(s). By the time I was aware of them, they had been almost completely buried. A friend said just before they covered them over, he tried to explore it, but it kept going, and going, and he gave up.

Does anyone else know anything about these?

I don't know anything about those tunnels. The only ones that I've been to on campus were in the sub-basement of the MUB - which were way to easy to get into to. They're basically just using it for storage of random crap. I have more pics, but yea, there was everything from holiday decorations, to the new ballroom plans (see pic). I still live in the area (leaving in December of this year)and there's still a lot more stuff in the area and on campus that I NEED to see - and I've already seen a lot!

Some of my favorite rhetoricians ever worked @ Michigan Tech. Did you ever have Cynthia Selfe or Anne Frances Wysocki for class? They are amazing teachers and writers.

You betcha

Yea, we all are nerds in some sense I suppose. There are a lot of "unique" people here - thats the nicest way to put it.

I've never had classes with those professors. They might only teach grad students or are no longer here. I'm in the Humanities dept, so I kinda know whats up. =)
