Does anyone else have issues with holding battery charges in the somewhat cold weather example: 28 degrees. I'll fully charge my batteries and then when I first turn my camera on they'll be at half life right away, or will be at half life after about 20 shots or so, then dead 10 shots later. Idk if its the battery or my camera, I had a battery dead today, after shooting off 20 or so shots, then switched in a different battery. I get home 5 hours later and put the same battery back in and it has a full charge. I put a brand new battery in and it starts off at half charge, wtf is going on with this camera, hopefully someone has experienced the same issue, proving that it's either the cold, or MY 5D.

Camera batteries don't like the cold. Warm it up in your hands next time and then put the 'dead' one back in and see how it works out for you. That's always worked for me (and several other people I know) when shooting in the cold and the battery is being cranky and saying it's 'dead' when it's not.

get one of those "hot pads" that are made to stick in your gloves in cold weather and toss it in with your back-up battery and see if that works.

Kevin - I had the same problem when I was at exploring the other day. They died so fast. I don't know if it's a Canon thing or not, but I own the 5D as well. Boooo I'm too cheap to get a battery grip and I'm sure that wouldn't help all too much.

I got an opteka battery grip with 2 extra batteries for $80 off of amazon. Works just fine for me.

The added weight is my concern. I wasn't sure if the Opteka was OK. I've heard the Canon grip isn't anything extraordinary either.

Like the idea of hanging onto the battery until you're ready to shoot. Glad you posted this, Kevin

my nikon batteries HATE the cold... so i keep them in my sports bra while exploring if it's chilly out. the hand warmer thing is a good idea though. i'll have to try that.

batteries do eventually wear out though, and sometimes chargers are bad. i'd bet on those two being more likely the case (if it isn't just the cold), than the camera being messed up.

My Canon battery isn't too bad but my cheap ebay knockoff holds a charge for roughly a day of shooting. I miss the D2Xs battery, I could shoot 1,100 shots on a single charge.

Didn't you get more batteries anyways?

right after i bought it i put it in my camera and turned it on and it was full, 3 hours later i got home and it had half life, so im guessing its the cold..

which is silly.

I disagree, the battery grip is a godsend. Even in the cold I have no issue of running out of battery before im done shooting. I shoot a 5D as well and have not had any battery problems at all.yet.

See, i couldn't live without the added weight. It makes the camera feel a lot more natural in my hands, plus makes shooting vertically so much more stable and easy for me.

I like the added weight and size with the 1D series and The D2/D3 cameras but how does the grip feel? The always looked like it wouldn't be flush and some
just looked cheap. If you can't really tell it isn't all one piece than I'll look into picking up a used one.

I may consider getting one... especially if it's good at blocking out the cold. When I do my concert photography with the 24-70 -- that's enough weight already. Then again, I got used to that, why not add the grip. Just want to use it enough to make it worthwhile. I just got a new tripod though! WOO!!

This happens to all batteries. It has happened before on most of my cameras, though the EOS 3 has been the biggest offender. The 2CR5 battery really hates the cold. I'll generally just take it out and put in it my armpit for a minute, then it starts working again.

That's what I do; I have the vertical grip/battery pack so the spare battery stays in an inside pocket until I need to switch.

Everything I do is a battery hog: I shoot RAW, long exposures, lots of extras (I bracket most shots), I check the monitor for sharpness, etc, etc. Having the spare is a must.
