Richmond CSO / Back in Richmond for winter break

Hey all!

I am going to be down in Richmond for winter break and I am looking to do some exploring. One think I've had my eyes on for about a year now is Richmond's CSO system. The Department of Public Utilities has also been kind enough to provide a map of outfalls here. However, I am not that experienced in draining so I was wondering if there might be some drainers in the Richmond area who would be interested in joining me on this exploration, or any tips about the system if it has been explored before. It would be much appreciated.

I would also appreciate it if any of you all wouldn't mind taking a newbie along for some surface exploring!

Many thanks,
~Teh Chappie

Also, here is the image of the CSO map.

It looks very interesting, too bad I am so far away! Good luck

When are you in town? I'm going to be exploring northern VA / Southern MD / DC on the 19th and 20th. I've never explored Richmond before, but I've heard of some great stuff, and I was hoping to spend at least one of those days there. PM me for details.

As far as I know, the only parts of the CSO system that have been explored are the Shockoe Arch Sewer and a small part of one of one of the other tunnels.

Random has been in there, but he's not on UER much anymore. If you want I can dig up his e-mail address. He has a good story about exploring the CSO stsyem:

I believe that gsxrac has been in there more recently, he may be able to help you out?

edit: Oh yeah, I've explored outfall 019 up to the tide gates. IIRC, it's a pair of big aluminum flaps. They should be liftable by one or two people. I've never been past them, but after the gates you should encounter a weir diverting the combined sewage into a 6' interceptor, from a 9' stone tunnel.

Thanks for the information. I've got a good month of free time, so I'll see what I can do. I'm not a full member yet, so I can't read the thread you linked to...if it has some valuable information, do you think could copy/paste the text as a pm?

Thanks,
~Teh Chappie

I'm going to be up there for the last days of December anyway. I like drains, and have been hoping to see more of Richmond's underground. I can't contribute much except my company, and I've been meaning to hit the rest of that big drain.

D'oh! Here's the story:

Posted by Random
Earlier tonight, I met up with Mist929292 to go draining. We drove over to the area near the drain, parked at ______ and walked to the drain. We slid under a fence and walked a short ways beside the train tracks to an open manhole shaft, which we climbed down, into a large and awesome drain. This drain was very nice, a twelve by twelve box, with channeled brick floor and concrete walls and ceiling. We headed up stream eventually reaching a fork, with CSO coming down one way and cleaner water coming from the other. We decided to cross the flow and follow the cleaner branch. Mist got across easily, making it look like no problem. Then I entered the flow. I was two steps from dry walkway when my feet were swept out from under me. I fell face first, my hands made useless for slowing my fall by the slippery floor. My forehead, cheek and headlamp impacted the floor, in the nasty CSO water, six inches deep. I lost my glasses, rendering me nearly blind, and the impact was enough to destroy my memory for the next fifteen seconds. I got out of the flow and we headed back out. I couldn't drive home, because without glasses, I can see clearly for about three inches. Mist drove me and my car home. I woke my mother up, explained the situation, and had her drive Mist home and me to the emergency room. I spent five hours in the emergency room, where they determined that I had a concussion.

Mist, I owe you BIGTIME.

Lessons learned:
1) Use the buddy system. Thank God I did.
2) Keep old pair of glasses in your bag, and use a glasses strap.
3) Princeton Tec Yukon HL, it's not just a headlamp, it's a way of life.
4) Don't wear worn out-to-the-point-of-being-flat skate shoes in brick bottomed drains.
5) Mist is a great guy, if you're going to go arse over tits and do a faceplant in a sewer, this is the guy you want to be there when you do it.

An update:

I went to work for about three hours today, which just about killed me. I was feeling nauseous and extremely dizzy, so I went to the doctor. The doctor checked me out and said I needed to rest more. Then, on an off-chance, he checked my neck. When he got finished poking and prodding, he looked at me and said, "Son, I can't believe they let you out of the hospital in this condition."

I am not that experienced in draining

If you're new to draining, you might not want to start out with CSOs. There are a few really big, awesome non-CSO drains in Richmond. They aren't my locations to share but shouldn't be too hard to find if you do some research or ask around.

CSOs are, at best, unpleasant, and sometimes dangerous due to methane build-up.

i've been wanting to get into sanitary sewers for a while and this seems like a good place to start, since we don't have CSOs down where i live. IMO the ick factor will be outweighed by the size and architecture. (or so i hope)

lol I agree completely, really. I've explored a few CSOs, and want to do more. Its not that they're that awful, but just that theres no reason for a beginner to do CSOs in a city that has really awesome regular drains.

Can't wait to see the huge ones that ULAYB found in Louisville for MAMU!

When Apple and you arrive, I will be more than happy to catch up and explore some buildings, houses, etc.

As for the drains....sorry. I just don't care for them (Ask Craig. He knows how I feel about drains. ). However, I can still get y'all to where the drains are located.

Completely true. I was once in a CSO up to my waist in water with poop floating around, but it was one of the best times ever. being in a 20 foot high tunnel makes up for it. Fun stuff for sure. Anyway, I might be in Richmond sometime over winter, definitely after Jan 17. I would love to explore some more drains/CSOs here.

I will still be in town for a few days after the 17th and would love to do some more draining.
