Um.... those are usually sanitary sewers...and not the cool, huger brick ones you'd see in London.... There's some pretty cool stuff out there, just go muck around the down town area, or along the Trinity river.

Thanks, I'm glad I didn't find that out the hard way. I've found a tunnel that goes into downtown, I will post pics when I tackle it... Thanks for the help.

| | | I would of explored it today if there weren't about 40 people in the area. Ok, mostly kids, but they already took notice to me hopping the fence. Guess I'll find out soon!

If you walk into a drain, so what? It's legal and public property and who's gonna do what about it? Are they going to follow you without flashlights? Not far. Are they going to call the cops? Doubtful, and if they did, do you think it would be any sort of priority and they would go in after you or wait outside to catch you leaving and ask what you were doing? HIGHLY doubtful. Go have fun!

Alex ant I canoed out of an outflow in Turtle Creek near Oak Lawn and there was a woman on a park bench watching us. I looked all around and said "Hey!?! This isn't Albuquerque."

Haha! When we came out of that one once someone made wooooooot woooooot train noises and the other would make chugga chugga chugga (that's a train noise too) for the old men sitting on the benches. Melancholy and I scared the bejesus out of this one guy and his kids as there were bbqing on the banks of the Trinity, we came out and had been yelling and making a shitton of noise, thinking no one would be at the outfall...I mean, who the fuck hangs out in the Trinity river bottoms besides us and hobos? They were cool though, talked with 'em for a while; just really curious as to what we were doing in there with bikes strapped to our second raft which was towed behind us.

| | | Ha-ha! I remember that it was Clay that started making the Choo-choo noises and then we joined in. That old dude on the park bench tried as hard as he could to react as little as possible. Funny as hell!

| | | Kidd Springs Tunnel looks cool. Time to get some nice rubber boots... So it's reasonably dog safe then? No piles of broken beer bottles lying about everywhere?

Just remember that it's a creek that's been covered for much of the way. Lots of big rocks, knee deep pools and stinky black mud. My dogs love it.

Last time (ok, only time) I was in Kidd Springs, I wore water shoes (with socks, because otherwise they rub blisters). It was after a meetup, so we brought along some explorers who hadn't tried drains before. They went the boot route -- took a trip to Walmart and got a nice set of waterproof footwear. One hidden pothole later and they were wet from the knees down, just like me... except they were lugging bootfuls of water. Oops! From what I've read, boots and even chest-high waders might be essential in older Northeastern cities, where the sanitary sewer and the storm sewer aren't separated. (I keep hearing the term "sewerfresh", and I'm a little scared.) Here, though, it just seems like more trouble than it's worth. But I'm not the most seasoned drainer by any stretch, so I'm open to other views.

I know guys that use boots and waders, and it usually seems like a hassle. Either they get tired more quickly from the waders, or they get boots full of water. I personally prefer a good pair of shoes made for that type of environment. Even in the colder months it is my preference
