Industrial tours

So I know a lot of people hate going on legal tours of locations. But I want to see more huge, active industrial locations and for most people, exploring those types of locations illegally just isn't viable.

So...are there any large, modern industrial locations in the Mid-Atlantic that offer tours for the public?

That impressed with Pittsburgh?

At some point in the near future they're going to start giving tours of Bethlehem Steel, but I'm not sure how much of the place will actually be open to the public.

Edit- didn't notice the active part

I have been on tours of a few TVA sites around, notably the Sequoyah nuclear plant in Soddy Daisy, TN.. that was years ago.

As far as industrial places I could probably swing a tour of Newport News Ship Yard, but you wouldn't be allowed to take pictures. If you were looking to take pictures, Norfolk Naval Base has tour busses in the summer time that you can go on and I'm sure you could get in contact with the public affairs officer to get a tour of an aircraft carrier there.

Well...... crap........

Oh and I can get you on to any base to take a tour but before you take any pictures you will need to make sure it isn't classified stuff which is usually in restricted areas so you shouldn't see anything like that unless someone messed up. As far as Newport News I'll look into the process for getting visitor passes, I know you need to be a US citizen and i think there are some other requirements I'll have to do some checking.

Well...... crap........

I got to go on a tour of the USS George Washington like 15 years ago when I was a boy scout, and it was AMAZING. An aircraft carrier is seriously a huge, floating industrial super-complex. With giant guns. And fighter jets. and a nuclear reactor. I would highly recommend it to anybody.

I know I work on the USS Theodore Roosevelt. The George Washington caught on fire like a few years ago when it was supposed to be taking the Kitty Hawks position in Japan. Too bad the Roosevelt isn't available for tours since it's in the yards right now.

Oak Ridge gives tours and you get to see some nuclear reactors. I think it might be $5 or even free - I'm not sure. They do them daily if I'm not mistaken. I wanna go sometime. One of the guys that came with us to the meteor shower at Phipps told me this and I kept forgetting about it until now. We should go!

When I was little I got to go inside the Holston Dam here because my grandmother had amazing connections to all sorts of people. It was awesome to see the turbines and go in the gigantic tubes.

Taking tours of active sites (or abandoned) would be interesting because you would get to see and learn a lot, but you couldn't really climb anything or necessarily take photos (or get the shots you want even if photography were allowed). I don't think I could really count it as exploring since you're being guided/lead. If they just turned you loose, sure. But I wouldn't say that I explored the Amazon if I were lead through the forest by a guide unless we were covering new territory, so I wouldn't say that I explored a place if I went on a tour of it. Regardless, I'd take advantage of it. Opportunities are not to be thrown away. =)

When I was a lot younger, my dad managed to pull off getting us a tour of a nuclear submarine (the USS Boise), at that time stationed at Norfolk. Though I didn't get to see any of the restricted areas of the vessel (aka, the reactor), it was still (needless to say) awesome. I even got to crawl down one of the torpedo tubes and sign my name with a grease pen.

You can tour the Corvette Assembly Plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky. You can see all of the major steps that go into building a new Corvette with the exception of exterior paint, which is done in a sealed "clean zone" in the plant. Go here for more info:

Another thing to look into are small sewage treatment facilities. A while back I wad driving to Pittsburgh with my mom when we saw this facility and decided to stop by to see if by any chance they would give us a tour. The guys were pretty thrilled that somebody would actually want to stop and learn about what they do.

The BMW plant here in SC gives tours. There's a bit of a lead time, so you have to plan ahead. I can tell you more about it this weekend

I'm actually on a road trip now and planning to use this thread to find some cool stuff. Just thought I'd bump it first to see if anyone knew of anything new?

It really depends on where you are but most power plants, dams, and water utilities should be doable, with the right phone number.

Not anymore. My friend's father in law works at Sequoyah, no tours of nuclear facilities because of 9/11.
