| | | | Exploring National City Stockyards in East St. Louis < on 11/23/2009 2:44 AM >
| | | Hello all, I'm traveling from Texas to St. Louis to visit the stockyards there. I believe it all closed down in 2002, but there are number of remains off St. Clair Avenue. Has anyone done any exploring over there? Is it true that there's a B&O Roundhouse close by? I'm traveling with my son and my husband. My spousal unit is not a big URer, so he's concerned about East St. Louis (maybe he's seen National Lampoon's Vacation one too many times). What should I tell him to qualm his fears? I already told him we won't go in the dark. As a big thank you to anyone who can offer advice and/or hints, here's a photo of the stockyards in my own part of the country, Fort Worth:

| | | Yes. Check out the meat plant as well. Just park somewhere inconspicuously and watch out for a crazy guy who's supposedly some sort of security guard. The meat plant is by far the most interesting building in that area. And yeah it is Estl, so it's not the best neighborhood... [last edit 11/23/2009 2:13 PM by SubLunar - edited 1 times]

| | | Thanks for the reply! I just got back today from St. Louis - man, what a WONDERFUL city that is! The architecture is just beautiful. I didn't get to the Roundhouse. I will try to go in the late spring, when it stays light outside longer, because I just flat ran out of daylight. As I'm not a great photographer, I need natural light, and plenty of it! I did, however, drive to the Armour plant. What a beautiful ruin! I didn't get all the pics I wanted, and it rained, so I'm definitely coming back. I poked around downtown East St. Louis and didn't have a problem at all. It all seemed more sad than scary. It's strange what this post-industrial economy is doing to the Midwest. Anyway, if you are from St. Louis - you have an awesome city!

| | | I agree. St. Louis is by far my favorite UE city that I've visited.
