a drain under University of Toronto

While exploring the University of Toronto steam tunnel system we encountered an alluring hatch

It was in one of the mechanical rooms at the tunnel level. Not far away from the hatch there was a manhole which reeked of sewer. We are not tough enough to explore sewers, but the hatch we lifted, and found something which looked like a rectangular trunk drain.

Recently we returned there equipped with rubber boots, and descended ebulliently into the drain.

Unfortunately we came to a dead end after some 40 meters. It looked like there used to be two passages before - one continuing south and another turning east - but they were cemented some time ago.

We guessed that the drain was connected to College St. drains (the cutoff is located right before College st.), but it's not clear in what way. Are there drains big enough under the downtown area? This stretch of a flooded tunnel is a mystery to us.

Where the walls really that greenish blue colour? Yeah, that's a cool find. I thought it was Taddle Creek for a second, but that's further east. You might find some answers on urbantoronto.ca because there are a few people there with very intimate knowledge of infrastructure in Toronto.

Yes, it's a little bit further east. But how did you guess the longitude of the drain? I didn't specify.

Would this be adjacent to Huron Street?

I got that impression since it looks like a modern tunnel and the west side of campus is the more modern side.

No, it's just east of King's College Rd., ten meters maybe.

The tunnel is weird, on the picture you can see an orange horizontal bar, and several others behind it. Have no idea what the bars are for besides punishing people without hard hats.

It almost looks like it may be a sump trench from construction, especially if it's close to the CCBR (based on your post).

Yeah, I'm going to agree with Archer, it looks like a sump, and it isn't close to any significant drainage. Cool though!

It's not too close to CCBR and it's much older than that. I don't know what it used to be, but right now it definitely acts as a some kind of sump.
