First time draining solo

About a month ago, AnAppleSnail was kind enough to show me where some local drains are. I finally got around to buying a new flashlight (I think my roommate stole my other one) and went looking around. I definitely should have gone with a headlight, walking around with an LED penlight in my mouth wasn't incredibly easy (or tasty).

So, yeah, here's some pics, I guess.

1,4, and 6 are looking up underneath manholes. 2 was a point where water was gushing out when AnAppleSnail tried to show me it before, apparently the construction workers were pumping it there so they could work, but they weren't working today. 3 was experimenting with shutter speeds, but I just have a point and shoot, so I had to put it into fireworks mode to get that. 5 was the point when I decided to turn around; the original pipe came to a T intersection with another pipe, and I couldn't decide which way to go, and kind of doubted I'd see anything too exciting at the end of them, so I left.

So, yeah, that's it I guess. The image quality is kind of low, sorry about that. I kept trying to resize them, but I couldn't manage to get it under 100k and still be at a good quality. Does anyone have any tips on how to do that? Like a program that will resize it down to a specific file size? The one I was using would only let me use dimensions.

I'm out of town for the weekend, but I'm back a few days early next week. If you're up for a bit of travel we'll hit bigger drains. If this is the one we gave up on for the gushing water, it goes under the student center to the chemistry building. It's a fair crawl, so I suggest a skateboard. You should message PyJar, he's another local starting in drains.

I used a free flickr account to host pictures, then I'd link to the 'Medium' .jpg file. That avoids the 100k junk. Glad you returned, and try real fireworks in a drain ;)

Don't you hate drooling all over your flashlight LOL

Headlamps are great.

I'd love to go, but I have a calc test Tuesday night (ruining my thanksgiving break) that I really need to study for. That was the pipe that was gushing water the first time. I tried to find the one that you mentioned near the bridge over the creek, but I couldn't actually find the opening. It looked like after the creek went through the park, there may have been something over there, but the only things I actually saw near the bridge were a couple 2 or 3 foot pipes, and I really hope those weren't what you were talking about.

And yeah, flashlight drool is gross

Is that the one they're digging up over by the athletic center? I keep meaning to duck in there to see if it branches before the construction zone, but I've never had a light with me when I think about it.

No, it was down the creek in the other direction. The one I was in was under Morrill, to the east of the construction zone. Apparently they were piping water form the construction zone into it, but since they weren't working that day, I was able to get in. The one I was talking about is in the direction of that park to the east of campus.

I'm a really experienced explorer and drainer; I've been in hundreds of drains and probably spent months in them if you totaled it all up...but being in a drain alone still scares the shit out of me, especially ones that you can't fully stand up in. So props for that! You've got some balls. (but try to be careful about it too...just always make sure someone knows exactly where you are going and when you will return and keep in mind that you won't get phone service in a drain)

i have a question for drainers out there... (i have never drained, but i probably will one day. i want to, so.. )
this question was prompted by the idea of going alone.. although it could happen when you are with someone too, anyhow.. if it is possible..
perhaps its my imagination running wild, but....... is there ever a chance, that if you are in a drain, that it could flood to the point where you would drown?

Absolutely. It can happen quite suddenly in some drains when it starts raining. A few explorers have been killed that way. Never go in a drain if there is a chance of rain. And especially if you're new to draining, don't go alone.

Happened here this time last year - two explorers were caught when the drain started to fill, and couldn't make it the mere 100m to the exit. One was rescued via a grille by some miracle, and the other died.
