| | | Huge Philosophical Question < on 11/14/2009 7:40 PM >
| | | Ok... not actually philosophical, but I found an abandonment my friend claims that nobody has lived in for years. The place looks pretty worn, there is really no front door with those stupid prickly vines all over it, the windows all have old brittle plastic covering them, and the back porch.... has electricity. All the sheds are piles, and I would never want to live in a place like that, but people are strange. I am conflicted about going inside because although everything is old and falling apart, the piles of wood on the back porch, the shorter grass... it just doesn't feel right. How would I go about researching the place before I make an informed decision of what to do?

| | | Light the place on fire. If no one runs screaming from the house in flames, you're good to go.

| | | I found electricity in an old barn next to an abandoned house - it happens. Walk up to the door, knock, and if someone answers ask if they: a) know how to get to xxxxx street b) is this the address of the person selling the X-Box c) oops wrong house, you were looking for a friends place The only limit is your imagination. I always have a backup story in case someone does come to the door. You could even write down on a piece of paper, an address just down the street (real or otherwise) to bring out, just in case the owner is a little irate. Just use common sense.

| | | First, is there a way in without B&E? If not, then I would shy away from it, but that's just me. Otherwise you might be breaking into somebody's house. But if you really want in, then I think you should be patient and try to find out for sure. I'll assume you live close enough so you can check the place daily. Have you been keeping an eye on it for a while or did you just find it? With winter fast approaching you will be able to see tracks - both foot and tire - in the snow and if the place gets shoveled/plowed (I know, some don't shovel and wait for the snow to melt). I'll use hunting as an analogy: Rule #1 is to "know what the target is." That should apply here, too.

You've basically just reiterated my fear. I've got some good photos of the yard and sheds, so I'll have to leave it at that until I know it is completely abandoned. Thanks guys.

| | | Leave a bunch of change on the front porch. If it's gone the next time you stop by then you'll know if someone else has been hanging around. That is, unless the guy who lives there happens to be blind in which case you gonna get raped.

| | | This approach takes a bit of time, but if you send a letter to the address in question and it comes back, you know it is truly abandoned. The text of the letter can be very innocuous and general, something along the lines of, "I am writing to inquire about the possibility of renting a room" or some other such nonsense. It shouldn't be a problem if you handle it that way.

| | | In Ohio, the County Auditor handles all property transactions, and their web sites list information like owners, property lines, etc. The quality of the information varies by county. Once you find out the owner's name, Google him or her and find out what happened. You might find an obituary or something like that that would give you an idea about the house. Also, take a drive by at night and see if there are lights on.

| | | Electricity to the back porch is the key. The meter is being read, and somebody is paying the bill. Follow the power lines and see where they go, maybe another building nearby?. Is there a phone line strung below the power line? The upcoming Census may determine occupancy. Pose as a hunter seeking permission.

Thanks. I should see if I can check with something like that.

The house is just down the street from my best friend's house. We go driving for the hell of it a lot, and I've personally never seen anything on. When I was nosing around, I did check the meter, and nothing was going. Yet I still have to wonder.

Of course, doing that you risk getting the fertilizer beaten out of you or worse... they might want to listen!

| | | In my area there are several houses that are in disuse, still owned and the yards are maintained by companies, not inhabitants. If its cold out, look for signs that the heat is on. I went into an abandoned cabin once that had a calendar from the 80's. Place was a mess, picked the phone...dial tone...it happens sometimes.
