Row Row Find the Towah

Forgive the title. The comrade came up with it.

I hate flying. I haven't been on a plane since 1999, meaning I was 10-11 years old the last time I flew.

And the last airport I was in? Mueller.

It was time to go back.

Long-term parking? Short-term parking? There is no parking now.

It's beautiful, in a twisted, derelict sort of way. There's a chain link fence with a hole in it, but the tower's bricked up pretty tight. Comrade suggested ropes and grappling hooks, but a couple goony college kids Spider-manning their way up the face of the tower would be pretty noticeable.

Good luck waiting for the bus now.

We dubbed this area "The Cage - Where the bad airplanes go". You can see the broken section where we crawled in.

Inside? A wonderland mountain of trash.

We looked for the baby.

It could not be found.

Have a seat. Right here.

Prerequisite chair and couch photos. We need to learn to bring a blacklight along.

A parting shot. I wonder how much longer the tower will stay standing.

We weren't the only ones out there. We ran into several groups of people, but kept our distance. If you were there on Thursday night, "hi".

Yeah, they seem to be pretty vigilant about keeping the tower itself sealed up. Not so much about keeping people out of the area completely, though.

Awww that's too bad that the tower was sealed up again. I was planning on going back with a tripod to get some better shots of all the bones in it. There is a flock of owls living in the tower, so there are owl pellets everywhere. They've got to be somewhat large owls too because the skulls were from decently sized rats. I still need to edit the shots that I did take, but hopefully I'll be able to do that shortly and stick them up here.

Owls? Damn, the comrade is an avid birdwatcher.

These days, the tower's looking kind of rickety, which I think is probably a big factor in why they keep it so tightly sealed. I'd love to be able to get all the way up to the top. It's made for some great photo opportunities.

Since it's Austin, I'm sure there is some group that loves owls. A quick Google search turned up TravisAudubon.org. I bet they could rustle up a way to get in there to explore the owlery.

I wouldn't be surprised, actually, if the doors were locked to prevent people from disturbing the owls. Austin has a great appreciation for its natural resources.

They've actually gone as far as removing the doors completely and bricking up the openings. When I went there a few months ago some enterprising folks had smashed a hole into said bricked openings, so it was fairly easy to squirm through. However, it does mean that they probably can't do much to let even respectable Audubon members in there.

I also saw a small flock of Quakers when we were there as well. They were hanging out in the trees over by the couch and chair. I think I counted 7 of them.

Anyhow, worth keeping an eye on it to see if it opens again

It probably is bricked up for the safety of the owls, and it can stay that way, since I'm not the type of person that carries a sledgehammer around.

I'm hoping they'll leave the tower standing, and not tear it down just to build more houses. It's a nice Austin landmark.
