Not unused, but the Thornton Tunnel is a rail tunnel that travels under East Vancouver/Burnaby. From what I understand of it, it starts at the south end of the Second Narrows rail bridge and comes out Dawson Street between Madison and Rosser Avenue.

Dunno if you count them as tunnels, but reduxzero and I were able to walk all the way from Canada Place to Waterfront underground. There's basically a long, covered parking lot or something underneath the convention centre, with connections to some loading dock tunnels, if i remember correctly.

Plus, at one of the ends, you can see the skytrain running through the Dunsmuir tunnel. If i'd just taken pictures...

I've done this a few times, Especially during the summer when they leave the doors at the Vancouver SeaBus terminal open.

If you google around, you'll find Max Action's writeup on The Labyrinth in MSP. Note the bit where he warns about the security and search around for what happened when someone popped an alarmed manhole into one of the tunnels.

It's literally the first result from a Google search for "max action the labyrinth" but I'll let that slide.

first post in the thread in question:

Someone has been arrested while in or exiting some downtown tunnels. Not much info is available at this time.

In case some people haven't heard, there are known cameras and alarms thanks to the RNC. Yes, they actually work, they're not just a fantasy made up to scare off N00bs.

It's also known that cops and city employees sometimes hang out on UER, so please keep wild speculation/names/photos to a minimum. I'm sure more info will surface if/when available.

An interesting story a friend told me recently:

While in University he worked at the Downtown Bay store at 674 Granville St in the Loss Prevention Department, so he had the run of the entire building.

It's a crazy place, retail being what it is, stores are constantly being changed, revamped, repurposed as the merchandise changes. The Bay was no exception.

They would often run lines for covert cameras to catch a dirty employee, or watch an especially theft prone area. Often they would go thru the ceiling to run their cables and come across a room or office with no way in or out, just 4 walls, the door having been long eliminated in one of the numerous renos. Some rooms would even have desks and other furniture inside that was just left when the room was sealed up.

There are several levels of sub-basements to that building as well. He told me they once found an extremely old boiler room with a huge old boiler no longer operating, dust on the floor indicated that nobody had been in that room for a long time. The boiler had been replaced by a smaller more modern unit on one of the higher basement levels. They continued thru the boiler room to another door that was chained locked, they had to cut the chain off with bolt cutters, because nobody had a key for the padlock. The door apparently led to a tunnel. They could hear the Skytrain running somewhere above them in the Dunsmuir tunnel, he was sure they were lower than the Skytrain. The tunnel headed downhill and he thought that it roughly followed Granville St towards the water. They walked all the way down to the end of the tunnel to the water, the portal was gated off with a thick steel welded grate.

I have no reason to disbelieve his story, but I have never heard of this tunnel before. He thought it may have been purpose built to drain water out of the boiler, in case that ever needed to be done, however the tunnel was quite big, big enough to walk upright, and graded down towards the water. From the sounds and vibrations, he was sure they were below the Skytrain tunnel, which would put them pretty deep.

Anyone ever heard anything about this? Has anyone ever seen a grated off portal near Granville Street at the water?

Anyway, I thought it was a pretty intriguing story.

Interesting indeed. Was actually down at that exact point last night (where Granville street would hit the water if it went through) and didn't notice anything. I will freely admit that my knowledge of the topography of the area is minimal, but based on how low the Dunsmuir tunnel is, it doesn't seem plausible for a tunnel to be graded down to the water, pass beneath the Dunsmuir tunnel, and then emerge at water level. I could very easily be entirely wrong about that though.

You may well be right. However, the Skytrain tunnels, Canada Line and Expo Line intersect somewhere on Granville as well, they cross, but the two lines are not connected, (one is higher than the other), but still end up at the same place at the same level (at Waterfront Station). I guess it all depends on the grade and the point at which it grades towards the inlet.

I was thinking that it could be that the new dig for the Canada Line obliterated the tunnel that he was in, depending on how deep it was dug. This was several years ago now that he was employed at the Bay.

I wonder if we could find out which tunnel is deeper, the new Canada Line or the old Dunsmuir tunnel that the Expo line uses.

I think it would be key to find the supposed outfall at or near the water. Some of that area down there, near Canada Place is on pilings, so it might take some poking around. If in fact Canada Line construction obliterated the tunnel, I would still expect to see some sort of outfall or opening, as it would be well north of any new Skytrain construction. Also, he felt that the tunnel generally followed Granville Street, however it may not exactly follow this alignment, and you wouldn't be able to tell from underground.

About 8 years ago my friends and I got into the opium dens under the Armory by stadium station. They were huge steel doors with steel straps with lock boxes. This did not discourage us as we went and bought 4 hacksaws and got in. The first thing we saw was a cannon. The tunnels stretched under granville street and all round downtown to the waterfront. The little purple tiles on the sidewalks around Downtown actually act as light as it takes the light from streetlamps and lights up the tunnels. The picture posted above however was not the access point we went through. I dont know what became of it after the building of the costco. but none the less it was a pretty sweet exploration.

I also got to explore the woodwards building as a couple of my friends and I were the ones squatting there prior to the social housing squat brought forth by the APC. THEY STOLE OUR SQUAT!!!!! so we moved to a building called B&E Furniture which was behind Brittania highschool on commercial drive. I believe it is now torn down. however I used to have another pretty cool squat on hastings street that has a very unique entrance point.....its across the street from the woodwards building anyone wanna know the specs? Its pretty cool place! who knows maybe you might even find my poop bucket!

I kick ass, everyone else sucks.

Ill just give this site as a freebee, hopefully someone will give me Full member status!

Across from the woodwards building there is a burnt down chinese resteraunt beside I think its a homeless shelter UGM? or salvation army or smthing. but anyways. you want the back alley! walk down the back alley looking in every cubby doorway because there is a cubby and when you look up there is a whiteboard that on the top of the cubby now you gotta jump up or get a boost or somthing but thats the access point. If you wanna be very worm like one drunken night my friends locked the squat and I ended up going between a board and a window and sliding into the basement....mind you all I had was a near dead lighter...that was hella fun....smelled of dead people.....someone should go take some pictures before they tear it down really cool! there is a burnt down excelator that is really fun to try and climb up hahaha

I too have been in the tunnel under the Beatty St drill hall. Part of the old Dunsmuir tunnel built by the CPR. They diverted the east end of the tunnel and dug the whole tunnel deeper, and then double leveled it for skytrain. Behind the big doors is the remains of the tunnel. I used to be able to get into the old Woodwards through the now gone tunnel at the (old) parkade across the street on Cordova. That and the skywalk when it was around. The squat you speak of on hasting is still being used by folks. Some of the buildings are being revitalized. Some are not.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too!

Well, I don't know about the opium dens "that extend all over downtown" that you hacksawed your way into, but I do know about the building across from Woodwards. (By the way, hacksawing your way into places will pretty much guarantee that you won't become a full member).

I was in that building across from Woodwards, it's actually several buildings that strangely all attached together. When I was in there (about 2 years ago) there was a giant old Chinese restaurant on 2 levels with oval windows looking out onto Hastings Street, on the street level was what appeared to be several smaller stores in a sort of mini-mall, including an old White Lunch Restaurant, once a Vancouver institution. The rear of the street level was very dangerous as the floor had come dislodged from the rear wall and it was sinking into the basement. The building was all connected, I entered in off the alleyway, walked all around inside, then emerged into the hallway of the Golden Crown Hotel, several addresses east of where I originally entered. I thought I had posted some pics on here somewhere, but it may have been on the old Just UE forum.

Anyway, that particular stretch of buildings is not being squatted, and has been completely gutted and renovated, which is good, because they were some nice heritage buildings. Everything on the south side of the 100 block West Hastings will be or is currently being renovated. See this related article:

by hacksaw I mean.....our lightsabers? haha

I used to work at an un-named anarcho bookstore and we found out through various meetings and books that the tunnels that we got into were from when chinese immigrants who were forced to live underground while they were forced to build our railroads. Hence the "opium dens" and as far as using tools to get into places my decision, doesnt reflect the UER site or its affiliates. Its kind of like how showcase and the discovery channel dont support or endorse the opinions and actions carried out some of the shows they air.
