Do you guys use Google Earth?
< on 11/6/2009 6:22 PM >

Hi guys, newbie here, "ive always been interested in this kinda stuff and have done some random exploration like sewer tunnels, old houses, the usual stuff.

Does anyone use Google Earth to scope out new spots? I was just surfing through the software the other day looking at countryside areas and have found all kinds of odd-looking areas and structures that I'd like to actually go out and try to find.

Here are examples of an area I'd like to check out:

158874.jpg (79 kb, 792x612)

The first shot is zoomed in close, and the next two are zoomed out a bit more.

This looks like an old, remote property with a possible swimming pool. It doesn't look like there's anything around it at all. Thoughts?

Yeah, I definitely use it and a lot of others do too... along with a couple other mapping tools.

Google Maps Street View was particularly useful when I was exploring the Los Angeles area.

I prefer Bing/Live Maps. Their birdseye view is great. Not to mention your saved locations are stored online, so you can access them from anywhere, which is the biggest plus.

I used Google Earth and maps to plan a New Orleans trip. Have locations and parking with street names and everything. I had a blast doing it too. Going to have to check out Bing/Live Maps.

I generally use some combination of Google maps (for the satellite, map, and street views) and Bing maps for the invaluable Bird's Eye view.

I use it to scope out locations, but keep in mind that many of the photos are outdated.

Also, using Google Earth, or any other mapping tool for that matter, one should always keep this rule in mind: Nothing is EVER as easy on the ground as it looks from space.

Finally, I use Google Earth as a sort of database. Placemarks for sites I've been to (marked in green) and those I've found / heard of that I've yet to get to (marked in red)

Works nicely.

Well, I just drove by there earlier today and wasn't able to find a way in- there are too many houses on all 3 surrounding roads (west east north) and the southern road is too far to walk from. Not to mention the barbwire fences on all boundaries. I really want to see what it is, though. I thought it looked too rectangular to be a pond, but who knows. I'm gonna take another trip out there and see if I can find some other way in.

I make full use of Google Maps/Streetview, and Microsoft LiveEarth.

I keep records using GoogleEarth, and it looks like a crackhead got ahold of a dart board.
