I live alone with a criminal
| | Roof door, first critique < on 10/26/2009 5:58 PM >
| | | Ok, so- a few months ago, I got into UE as a named hobby. Shortly after, I got into the photography angle. Since then I've already improved significantly (as compared to my first photos). To this point, there hasn't been much reason to post photos here since, for most of them, I can see obvious flaws off the bat- no need to hear what I already know. Recently, though, I've got a few photos that I can't think of any good way to improve. Since I'm far from perfect, I'll ask those who know a lot more- what can I improve? Roof door in a brewery:

| | | I like this a lot, great lighting. MY only critique is maybe trim a bit off the left side of the photo, it's kind of "dead space". But I still like it.

| | | I agree with Protios. The left side being dark and without a lot of visible detail leaves a little to be desired. I would either crop it or find a way to lighten it up in post. Not bad though, keep up the good work.

| | | Yeah a little boring on the left side of the shot. There's not much there so it really leaves it empty on that side. I do like the shot though.

| | | What if you try cropping it to portrait?

you shouldn't 'create' a composition in post, especially not one that drastic.

I do it frequently (on broken shots) so that I know how I should have composed it - it will lack resolution and correct exposure, but it's an object lesson for later. Clearly it's best to do it right, but learning is a good second best.
MacMan, I would suggest removing the large piece of bright debris - consider every detail to be a deliberate statement, with stray marks detracting from the picture. At the top you have a pipe that's just enough in frame to draw your eye up, although all the other lines are quite good. If you can manage a touch of light-painting you can fight the bright/dark of the door. Here it probably wouldn't have helped unless you cast the catwalk's shadow upwards into that negative space - a flashgun might be bright enough; depends on the door. Try this one on a return trip at dusk, with the door half-open (and RAIN visible), along with the roof - especially if you can frame a roof feature in the half doorway. Mixing brightness levels in photography is handy for emphasis and added interest.
