Is anyone in the Detroit area up for some Urban Exploring Halloween weekend ?
This might be our last chance before old man Winter comes knocking, so let me know!

Winter is one of the best times to do UE...less people out and about.

And nice tracks in the snow leading directly to your ingress point.

Hey Man, I was thinking of hitting Fisher Body 21 if you are interested. I just got a new Dslr and I wanna try it out, if you are the same JohnInMi that is on Flickr, your stuff is really good and you could probably teach me a thing or two.

Let me know, I was thinking Saturday morning or something.

Well not if you're smart about it...like avoiding going when there's a lot of snow on the ground.

I would be game for sometime in November if you're up for it.

I never have (I'm newer) but I would be willing
if there wasn't snow (or much snow).

Definately! Winter is my favorite.

Not if you're careful, as was mentioned earlier. Thay can however tip you off to the presence of other "undesireables" in the area.

Too much snow can be another problem entirely. No one likes to twist an ankle or worse stepping in a hole hidden by 2 feet of snow.

Ah good point, I looked it up and they are supposed to hit the streets by 6 PM each night, so just going to have to do some day exploring.

you mean aside from the hundreds of other footprints worn into the snow at every "ingress point" by the dogs, cats, and other people who constantly go in and out of the thousands of abandoned blgs in this city all year round?

The constant freezing and thawing of the ice unsettles parts of the old buildings, causing roofs and floors to collapse. During the winter, its really advisable to steer clear of all but the most recently abandon until a thaw has had a week or two to do its damage...

Last winter about 1/4 of the roof at an old auto factory (7 or 8 stories up, so It wouldn't have been scrappers) collapsed to the floor below it. I about shit my pants when I saw the aftermath, as I had been photographing from that very section of roof as late as mid October. I'll post some pictures later on...

Wow, now THAT would be something to see! I explored a partially demolished (by a professional crew, not by Mother Nature ) building this past Summer that was in a similar state of repair. I was actually able to lean out a bit (at my own risk, of course) and photograph upwards. You could see the remains of the floors several stories up through the gaping hole.

Here's the roof about a year ago...

Here I am shitting my pants in light of winters fury...

And here's why, I was photographing on that very section in late October of 2008

This is an airborne from some time ago, most of the roof was intact...

Here's one that shows what the roof looked like about the time the first photo was taken, that second smaller hole also developed after the above was taken

Although they may seen like a cool place to shoot pics, I think abandonment rooftops are a bad idea.

Most would argue that UE in general is a bad idea...
