| | | Island airport's success may mean waterfront parking lot
A dramatic jump in passenger traffic at the island airport has triggered interest among other airlines and fears the airport's controlling agency wants to build a giant parking lot along the waterfront. The Toronto City Centre Airport airport handled 500,000 passengers last year, compared with only 25,000 annually before Porter Airlines came on the scene, and that number is expected to hit 750,000 this year. The Toronto Port Authority announced last week that other carriers have asked about setting up shop there, although it refused to name them. On Tuesday, it announced that Air Canada Jazz, which once operated at the island and wants to return, had dropped a lawsuit launched against the port in Ontario Superior Court in early 2006. The airline is, however, continuing its lawsuit in federal court, which seeks access to the facility and damages from loss of business caused by not operating on the island, said Air Canada spokesperson Peter Fitzpatrick. "The bottom line is Air Canada is seeking fair and equal access to what is a federally-owned and operated facility, the Toronto island airport," Fitzpatrick said. "The goal is to return to the island." Meanwhile, U.S. carriers that have been mentioned as possible tenants include Houston-based Continental Airlines, which flies the same Bombardier Q400 turboprop plane Porter uses. Continental did not respond to calls seeking comment. The renewed interest comes just weeks after the port authority shelved a plan to build a $38 million tunnel connecting the airport to the mainland, which didn't draw the hoped-for federal infrastructure money, and the announcement that airport foe Mayor David Miller doesn't intend to run again. All of this has Councillor Adam Vaughan worrying that the port authority is looking longingly at the derelict, city-owned Canada Malting silos site as an opportunity to expand its airport parking facilities, potentially by 600 spots. Currently, there are only about 220 parking spots near the ferry that takes passengers to the island. "Of course there is a need for more parking. There is growing demand for parking," said Anthony Pappalardo, vice-president of Stolport Corp., which manages the lot. Pappalardo said the adjacent Canada Malting site might lend itself to a redevelopment that would expand the amount of waterside parkland while also increasing vehicle parking, possibly underground. The city is considering whether to tear down the old silos, having recently ruled out turning them into a city museum. "As a citizen of the city, I think the Canada Malting site has tremendous appeal from a parks perspective," Pappalardo said. "And parking capacity, real estate development and large parks are not mutually exclusive. You could put parking lots under parks." A city hall source told the Star that an intermediary approached the city about three months ago to sound out the possibility of expanding parking onto the silo site. The port authority has not made a request, said the authority's chair, Mark McQueen: "It is not on my list of priorities today." Vaughan, who represents the area, worries a proposed sports complex in the portlands, which would include a surface parking lot, may open the door for the port authority to argue for similar treatment for the airport. "If we sustain the practice of paving the water's edge for cars and pushing people inland, it gets really stupid," he said. "How much more of the waterfront needs to be paved to accommodate vehicle movement?" Vaughan said the city should take a strong stand. "The principle must be that when it's public property, it should be usable by people and not simply a place to store automobiles." A large surface parking lot for the airport would be hugely unpopular, said Brian Iler, chair of Community Air, a citizens' group that has fought the airport for years. "You'll get a huge amount of opposition to that from the community," he said. Source

But sadly, ugly as fuck. Not many people will see it for its history, they'll see it as an eyesore.

That is true bandi, I agree a lot of people think it's an eyesore but to us it's a piece of history and we love places like this. I think they should declare it as a landmark as it's been sitting there for years.

Compared to what? The airport hangar? The rec centre next door? The two dozen interchangeable p.o.s. condos in either direction from it? The elevated highway and rail corridor that you can't even see behind the condos anymore?
yep. |

| | | Of all the proposed plans, I like the park w/ 4 feet of silos idea - that would be really cool (so, like a giant Audi sign from an aerial view); as much as I love the silos, they gotta do something, no? They can't sit derelict on the waterfront foreva' j->

| | | Why not? It works for Montreal. We even light ours up at night to help show them off better.
Edit: if Torontonians think that they're ugly, it's because (as mortimer suggested) they're surrounded by ugliness. I doubt people would have an issue with them if they were integrated with a more eye-appealing waterfront landscape than what's there now. [last edit 10/22/2009 7:14 PM by micro - edited 1 times]

| | | We all hate to see them go, but we all look at things like this differently than most people. To us there's a beauty in the decay. It would be a shame to see them gone, but I don't see much hope of them being saved. I love what was done in Montreal, it makes everyone see the beauty that we all see without the pretty lights, but do I see Toronto thinking like that? Not really. Montreal seems to have a much greater respect for history and will go the extra mile to preserve it. Toronto, as much as I love the city, just doesn't seem to get it.

Oh, yeah. You tear your history down, man! 30 years old, let's smash it to the floor and put a car park here! I have seen it in stories. |

I'm just saying, 99.8% of Torontonians probably think it's an eyesore. It's a huge, dilapidated concrete mass that isn't making anyone money, and most would rather see condos/parking/etc on the site. It's not a particularily useful building for anything today, and would likely require an astronomical amount of money to convert it into anything useful. I love the place, as I stated in another post, but seriously doubt most of Toronto sees the building through the same eyes we do. (The malt plant in Montreal is gorgeous at night)

Even if they were to leave 10 feet or more of silo, throw a roof on it, connect them with doorways and uhh... I dunno, make a malt museum in them.

The waterfront landscape surrounding them is not eye-appealing?
Also, they are lit up at night, though partially.

In a recent community meeting, about half wanted to preserve it. Its appeal lies in a cross-section of the population who either simply enjoy its hard-edged concrete industrial aesthetic, and those who would prefer to have overt evidence of our history on-site. I'd say 0.2% of Torontonians would prefer replacing it with parking if the building collapsed tomorrow, since parking wouldn't be of use to many people and most others would prefer parkland or commercial (retail) uses.

There are also some exciting improvements destined for Queen's Quay. Part of the road will be closed and rebuilt for pedestrians and cyclists. The empty industrial lands near Redpath will become a new neighbourhood with some Dutch architecture and what should be some interesting public spaces.

| | | Doesn't surprise me they're thinking of putting something as nice as a parking lot there. And here I thought the City of Toronto was trying to discourage car use by its untimed and uncoordinated traffic lights, road closures, streetcar priority light system, etc Toronto, the city with a less than stellar history of preserving its heritage.
Keep it fuzzy. |
