Crossroads Mall OKC "partially deserted"

Darn it, the headline had me excited: "Deserted shopping mall bleak symbol of Fed bailout". That would have been a cool one. I remember when Crossroads Mall was the biggest thing around -- like Mall of America, except in Oklahoma.

But sadly, it's only "partially" deserted. A couple of snippets:

OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - A $29 billion trail from the Federal Reserve's bailout of Wall Street investment bank Bear Stearns ends in a partially deserted shopping center on a bleak spot on the south side of Oklahoma City.

The Fed now owns the Crossroads Mall, a sprawling shopping complex at the junction of Interstate highways 244 and 35, complete with an oil well pumping crude in the car park -- except the Fed does not own the mineral rights.

[yadda yadda $29 billion to buy Bear Stearns bla bla bla]

Crossroads Mall, half-empty after anchor stores Macy's, JC Penney, Montgomery Ward and Dillard's all pulled out, was brought out of foreclosure in April with $77 million in debt, according to Ann Marie Randolph at the Oklahoma County Sheriff's office. It is now up for sale for $24 million.

sounds like a few malls I've been too, like six flags mall in arlington. the most fascinating one ive been too is metcalf south in kansas city. its a mall that was peak in popularity in late 80s-early 90s, and still has its anchor stores, macys and sears, but everything in between is empty. its all lighted and kept clean and and fountains running, but all the store fronts are empty with 1980s signs up, 3 stories of em. It's right out of a movie.

Metcalf South sounds like Prestonwood Town Center in Dallas near the end of its life. The owners had a grand plan to turn it into high-tech space for dot-com boomsters. But they had long-term contracts with Neiman Marcus and (I think) Macy's. Neither anchor would agree to terminate the lease, so Prestonwood simply shut down everything else. Neiman's was particularly cheeky about the situation, frequently lampooning Prestonwood on signs inviting shoppers to continue visiting until their location at Shops of Willow Bend was completed.

In the end, their high-tech idea came on line just as the dot-com boom went bust, and the mall was demolished in favor of apartments and a Wal-Mart.
