| | | The link above seems broken, try this one: http://www.fox8.co...xt,0,3223321.story or just read this: CLEVELAND - CLEVELAND -- Demolition work continues on the former Howard Johnson's hotel on South Marginal Road. The building had been vacant for almost two-decades when the City of Cleveland ordered it demolished this past spring. Lakeview 2006 LLC won a court order to stop the demolition when the property owners claimed they were going to redevelop the site. That order was lifted last week. Cleveland City Councilwoman Shari Cloud is pleased the property is being demolished. "90 is the gateway to the east side of Cleveland and it's a wonderful skyline, but then you've got this thing in the back," said Cloud. Northeast Ohioans have been stopping by to watch and reminisce about the old hotel, restaurant and nightclub. "It was fun and it was a beautiful building inside. There was a lot of wood and red carpet everywhere," said Doug Berg who worked as a deejay in the hotel nightclub. Berg met his wife at the club in the 1970's. "This girl came up and walked by, slipped me her phone number and walked away. A couple of months later, I decided to give her a call and we've been together ever since." "It was really the place to be. It really brings back memories," said Kim Robinson who lives in Cleveland. The demolition and clean-up could take up to 60 days. Councilwoman Cloud says they're anxious to make plans for the property. "We're looking at some economic development and more jobs for the community."
I wish I had the chance to check this out... [last edit 10/14/2009 8:02 PM by jacunda - edited 1 times]

| | | I can't help but feel a little nostalgic, since that was one of the first places I explored a few years back, but its good that the place is finally coming down.

| | | Last weekend, it just had a few chunks taken out. I'll drive by it on my way home today and have a look and maybe snap a pic.

| | | My brother just called me to tell me about this a couple days ago. I had a feeling it was going down soon. Thought they were going to renovate it into condos or some such? As for redeveloping...really??? That neighborhood? Highly unlikely, but ok. Seems many of my favorites are going the way of the wrecking ball. First Ridgeview, then Chippewa, now the HoJo. Of course, the only real redeeming feature of that hotel was the view the roof offered.

Thought they were going to renovate it into condos or some such? According to the local news, a developer had bought the place and was given a timeframe to which they were to make it into condos/apts, or whatever. They apparently didn't make the timeframe and the courts ordered it to be torn down. The developer couldn't or didn't appeal in time. |

Ah, story of the area. I know there's a couple other areas where developers have had grandiose plans and then not had the means to follow through. Kinda sad, actually.

It's not in a bad neighborhood, its in a sort of... non-neighborhood. There's nothing there, except for Channel 8 and Horizon Science Academy (which has a bunch of broken windows, so I thought it was abandoned, but there were lights on inside!) I got some pictures of the teardown I'll post tomorrow. There is one more abandoned high-rise hotel in the Cleveland area, though.

There is? I can't think of where/what it might be.
