How About A Little Rural Exploration?

Seeing as I don't live in downtown Birmingham, I sometimes have to improvise my exploration with what's given.

Luckily for me, I found a little gem this week!

Welcome to the abandoned ninja house!

Let me preface this by saying that there were no ninjas inside (thank God), but that this house managed to go unnoticed by me for a good twelve or so years, and I probably drove by it at least one hundred times each of those years.

It wasn't until two weeks ago that I even noticed that this house existed. "Hmm, that place looks pretty shabby," I thought to myself. I spent the next week driving by it and not remembering to look at it until I had already passed it. "Damn you, ninja house!" I exclaimed.

But yesterday, I decided to check out the house. Needless to say, this is one of the better decisions I have ever made.

Let us start with a view of the house!

This house is pretty untouched. I guess it pays off being a ninja house! How untouched is it? Let's just say the squash is still canned. I personally like the disgusting brown ...substance in the jars to the right.

Now to go inside!

Well, I hate to be a party pooper here, but I only have one picture uploaded of the inside of the house. It was pretty clean for an abandoned house, and there was only one sign of a squatter - an old opened can of sardines and a bunch of blankets piled in a corner.

However, this room was almost completely empty.

Now let's head to the many garages out back!

You know, it's probably been a while since these buildings were built...

After staring at those roots in astonishment for a few minutes, I looked up to see just how untouched this place really is.

Of course, I don't know what the logic of a hair dryer in the middle of a garage is, but who am I to ask questions?

Oh, that's right. I'm a human being in AMERICA, so I have the right to have questions. Questions such as "how long has this place been abandoned?"

Well, God himself must have been listening, because as soon as I ask this simple question, I turn around to see this:

How handy!

Well, that concludes our mini-tour of the abandoned ninja house of Alabama.

I'll probably update this thing continually, seeing as I pass it about 3 days a week.

Looks like the power meter is still in the meter box on the side of the house (first picture). If so the house might not be abandoned?

Oh, my picture doesn't show it, but all of the wires to the boxes were cut.

I was kind of iffy going in at first, because I asked a friend what he knew about the place and he said "I think some old black man lives there." One of the side doors was wide open, so I just went up to it and knocked. When there wasn't a reply, I went inside.

Needless to say, I was expecting an old black man to jump out at me at any moment.

My friend and I decided that the owner of the house probably lived alone and died, seeing as there was still boxes of stuff in one of the rooms.

Well great find you have here. That wall of shelved "goods" i guess i'll call it is something else that's for sure. Really like your pictures though and your writeups to go along with the them are very detailed...aswell as funny. I must say most of them made me chuckle. I really enjoyed checking this out. Thank you very much for sharing it.

Heck yeah, man!

I'm free pretty much any time after this weekend, so whenever you can make it, shoot me an email!

My 'neck of the woods' is also filled with abandoned trailors that I haven't had the balls to look into yet, hahaha.

When you explore enough rural/small town shanties in the south, you quickly realize that they ALL have shelves of jarred "goods". It's like a rule.

i like picture #5. mother nature always reclaims what is hers. i like old farm houses because they have less of a chance of being destroyed by teens since they are so far away from everything. you can find lots of neat stuff in old barns too, like old cars to antique farming equipment and old signs.

That's one of the things that amazed me about this place - it's right off of a major highway and there's a high school less than 5 miles away from it.

Dozens of kids pass it every day without noticing it, I guess.

However, when I pulled in there today to take a phone call, the old people in the car behind me looked at me in disbelief, hahaha.

Oh, and if you want to talk about nature reclaiming what is hers, check this out:

The original structure of the house looks like it was built in the 1800's. It's been added on to several times, but originally it probably didn't have electricity and certainly didn't have indoor plumbing.

I love the door casings and interior doors in this house. Nice solid southern pine paneled doors, with very stout casings, and nice trim. I looks like at some point someone installed a drop ceiling in the living room. Strange.

The whole place is probably constructed of southern yellow pine, which turns to lightered, or lighter wood over the years, basically dripping with creosote and VERY flammable.

If you get the opportunity, look in the attic. I have been to a couple of untouched houses like this and they both had their attics stuffed full of all kinds of crap because these houses were built before rooms were designed with closets, so lots of stuff was stored in the attic.

By the way, check out the base boards in the third picture. That must be 8" or 10" high. Wow, that is really beautiful. I bet those floors would be stunning if they were sanded and polished.

Wow, you've officially made me 100% more interested in this house. I would have never thought it to be that old!

I'm astounded at your knowledge of Southern architect/interior decor, as well.

I'm definitely going back to the house tomorrow, and I'll be sure to try to find a way to the attic!

I promise there will be many more pictures tomorrow!

So I'll admit it took me a bit longer than a day to get more pictures, but I did go back there the next day.

I apologize in advance for the small pictures. I don't find these Flickr-worthy, but they give a good insight on the inside of the house.

I only had time to take a few pictures of the interior before having to run off to my next errand.

Let's start with a picture in the kitchen!

The kitchen is seemingly where all the furniture was gathered. There are a lot of cabinet things which have sparked no interest in me in there. It's really more of a nuisance than anything else.

And Montag, it's true - they installed drop ceilings in every room. Now that almost all of the tiles have fallen, the original ceiling is revealed, and I think it looks pretty cool.

And ever since you mentioned that the bathroom was added on later, it's totally noticeable. Stepping into the bathroom, you notice a decent drop in the floor level.

But regardless, the scale that the last owner used is still in there, along with a sketchbook.

I didn't notice it was a sketchbook until I was home and uploading my pictures. Next trip, I'll definitely take a peak in it!

I only had a good ten minutes to spend in the house this time, so that's it for today's update.

We have to hit these rural treasures soon. Don't get sick of them until we get to hit them!
