Lighting Up The Darkness - Toronto Drain Mystery

I was recently in Toronto, looking for appartements in the Downtown area to rent.

My travels brought me close the the Eatons Center (Queen Street side) It was late evening and I was making my way up Queen Street and stopped to fiddle with my IPod when I noticed a strage glow coming from below me. To my amazement I found myself standing on a drain cover. Even more shocking was the fact that the strange glow was emanating from within the drain itself.

I stepped around the drain to get a better view into its depths when I spied a long (20 meters) series of connected rope lighting running down the length of the drain.

Immediatly my first impulse was to pull the cover off and enter the drain. unfortunately the streets were packed with people traveling to where ever they were going.

My question is Does anyone know who put the lights there and why they did it?

I find it hard to believe that they have been placed there by the city, and even harder to believe someone has used the drain cover to access the tunnels below.

Someone help me, I cannot stop thinking about that drain and those damn lights.

Yes, I know who and why. But it's not a drain.

please enlighten us?

We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained we must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be by the better angels of our nature.

Okay what is it? I know we're a Ultra Secret Society, with many rules and Dogma. But I cannot stop thinking about it.

I HAVE to know.

We have agents among the utilities. Let's just say that their 'projects' are the reason all road work takes longer and uses more prefab&concrete than it should...

It's a utility tunnel. Arched concrete, about 5.5 feet high at the centerline. Rope lights, as indicated. A trough down the middle of the floor for drainage. Occasionally a large valve control wheel. And that's about it.

Addendum: Okay, I feel a bit embarrassed to be pulling this sort of ultra-mysterious shtick. But this is a publicly visible thread, and talking about something like this in detail in a public and googleable forum thread is not something I'm going to do.

I posted photos of this a couple years ago. Glad someone went down to check it out. (and I'm not surprised it was Kowalski!)

I believe you saw what that particular stretch of tunnel looked like on Saturday, on the south wall of my tent. Not that I know anything about mysterious rope lights, nor would I associate with a n'er do well like Kowalski.

yep.
