I don't think anyone minds seeing this thread again unless someone is begging for coordinates. This place is sweet....

but I'm probably just biased.

And if they are Asking how to get there...

I had someone email me asking how to get there, where to park, which paths to take, what stuff to go look at, and how to avoid the people on-site. Uh, nope!

Not asking for coordinates or whatever, but is it clean? It may be obvious, but with all the places in it you guys went, it's not radioactive testicle shrinking right? I've never done any place nearly as cool or as nuclear as this, so I'm honestly just wondering if there is any need to be concerned about any contamination here or places like it? Any way to tell, or would research on a particular place let you figure that out?

Let's just say that I missed my chance to visit one that had to go through the cleanup process. A local came in with a geiger counter and found nothing, of course. The metal drums are solid concrete.

This place was never finished so there was never any fuel there. A rather large group of vultures lives on one of the buildings, and there's rust aplenty... but you'll encounter no radioactive material.

"The board of directors for the Tennessee Valley Authority on Friday approved nearly $250 million toward the possible reopening of one of its nuclear reactors in Alabama.

The board, meeting in Knoxville, Tenn., approved the fiscal year 2011 budget that included $248 million to fund the initial engineering design and site preparation for Unit 1 at the Bellefonte Nuclear Plant. Final approval for the project is not expected until next year."
http://blog.al.com...million_to_re.html

Alabama may luck out still. They've been trying to restart the project since 2008, I think. Either way, Bellefonte is probably the only one that is viable for retrofitting. It was the most complete of the cancelled TVA nuclear plants as far as I know. Unit 1 was 88% and Unit 2 was 53% at the time of cancellation. Yellow Creek, in comparison, only made it to about 30% before being scrapped (and the NASA project that took over stopped at 80%). I'm not sure exactly how far along this place was at cancellation - one of the buildings is fairly extensive and seems close to completion and another is maybe about 2/4 of that, but the remaining two are nowhere even close. I think TVA would likely demo the place and start over (or find a new site without the surrounding industrial park) if they wanted to do anything with nuclear power in the area.

Spiders appears to be safe, until someone decides it's worth the millions to demo it. =)

The most lol-worthy nuke plant history: Our 1970s-era nuclear plants don't actually require evacuation routes because they don't go up in smoke, but after everyone was done borrowing billions to completely finish a nuke plant, some small communities refused to sign the evacuation plan. Without any technical merit this made it illegal to operate the plant, so it was 100% finished and never sold a kilowatt-hour of power.

That state has the highest power bills per kWh because they're paying off those loans. They decommissioned the plant and sold off a lot of the equipment. There is a 50 kW experimental windmill on site as a final kick in the teeth.

I must rappel off the inside of that cooling tower. Looks like there are plenty of places to tie off at the top of it. Remind me again how tall this thing is so I know how much rope to bring. That's something you never want to come up 20 feet short on. ;)

I hate to ask again but how certain are we on that? I don't want to bring too little but at the same time I don't want to haul an extra 60 feet of rope weight up that freaking ladder. lol.

Good enough for me. Anyone interested in taking that plunge with me? If you don't know how to rappel, I can teach you. And if you don't have a seat, I can show you how to tie one yourself and will make sure it is safe before you get on the line. Anyone inexperienced will have someone experienced under them. That way if something does happen, your only going to fall as far as the person under you.
