Im from IL but a buddy of mine on here (dont think he is on that much) goes up that way quite a bit. I have heard of a lot of cool stuff up that way I will just thought I would see how far north you were.

I've been through the Range quite a few times without ever finding a really abandoned mine; the pit mines are lakes now (great to explore my kayak!) and shaft mines that are tour mines (Pioneer, Soudan). The rest got plugged and demolished, I thought. What mines did you see?

You listed both of them thats why I was in no hurry to post the images... Pioneer has no tours but is open to walk around via the walking trail around the lake. Soudan on the other hand is usually loaded with tourists unless you pick a rainy day in the middle of the week like I did then its possible to do your own thing with no one around. I guess there were a total of 4 mines close to Ely and the Soudan mine had a sister mine somewhere close by I need to get more in depth in the area and find maps from the time to try and locate the other sites. I had also read that there was allot of mining activity all around lake vermilion but I haven't heard if there is anything left around there.
The other thing that interests me is any of the old logging stuff still around. I know of a wood logging platform that is currently under 6 in water that measures approximately 20x20 ft. and a locomotive that was run off its tracks into Basswood lake at the end of its career and is still there.
Do you know of anything else like this in the general area?

I've driven town-to-town tracking down all the old shaft mining sites and even some pits that looked inactive from the sky with mixed results. Nothing too interesting except for the occasional hoist house that's been refurbed or a dry house turned into a factory.
There are a few things I have yet to check out on dah wrange, though, like the Tomahawk Camp... I need to do a more thorough look into the CC labs outside of Hibbing, too. Anyway, if you ever wanna go up to Pioneer and see what the situation there is, let me know... I would like return trip. According to my map there's another shaft north of it, though I don't recall ever checking it out.
