| | | IanK1968 and I checked out the Milne House years ago but it was sealed tight. These days, the vandals and nature are slowly destroying the building...
THE FIXER TheStar.com This old house faces uncertain future JACK LAKEY/TORONTO STAR Instead of being restored, Milne House has been left to slowly fall apart. A heritage property in Charles Sauriol Conservation Area is slowly crumbling, due to vandalism, neglect and the ravages of time. There were big plans for Milne House not so long ago – a restoration that would allow it to serve as the southerly point of a nature trail to the forks of the Don River – but a lack of financing has consigned it to an uncertain future. The farmhouse, nearly 150 years old and an early example of classic gothic revival architecture in Toronto, is covered by overgrowth, has had the boards pried off its windows by homeless squatters and is plastered with graffiti. Someone has even tried to set it on fire. Jim Russell called to say he's concerned the house isn't properly secured and is vulnerable to further vandalism, given its remote location. We found it obscured behind trees and weeds near a parking lot at the foot of Old Lawrence Ave., which runs south from Lawrence Ave., just east of the Don Valley Parkway. STATUS: Garth Armour, a city official who's been involved with the house for more than 15 years, said Metro set aside cash for a rehabilitation in the mid-1990s, but the project was shelved when the province imposed amalgamation on Toronto's municipalities in 1998. The city will cut back the overgrowth, cover the windows and clean off the graffiti, he said, adding he hopes the restoration will still happen. We do, too. | | | Oh yeah! I remember seeing this house from Lawrence Ave. when I used to work in the area. Didn't realize it had such historical significance. Doesn't surprise me though, unless it's privately purchased don't hold you're breath. [last edit 9/16/2009 5:33 PM by PartyPooper - edited 1 times]
