| | | Going to Michigan's Upper Peninsula < on 9/9/2009 8:12 PM >
| | | I will be spending a couple days in the upper peninsula later this month. I am really excited. I know of a bunch of ghost towns to visit and a peninsula supposedly full of abandonment

| | | There are soooo many places there. I was just there for a week-long camping trip. We didn't really hit any ghost towns though. If you like the mining stuff, try here. http://www.coppercountryforum.com/

| | | The old Kincheloe AFB (now Chippewa County International Airport) has a lot of interesting, unused structures to tour. The Navy's old Extremely Low Frequency radio transmit/control site tucked away in the national forest near Republic would be cool to see now that it's not only closed, but apparently abandoned. /-/ooligan

| | | I might be heading up there as well in the beginning of November. Half of Michigan is a ghost town, I don't figure it will take a whole lot of digging to find some fun places.

This place sounds interesting. I may have to put a local-to-that-area friend on this one!

| | | The tree huggers association would also be a good bet. I put them to good use once or twice when looking for obscure military sites to 'protest'

I know this information is way after the fact... but I think the light you heard about is called The Paulding Light. Directions to the Paulding Light! Take State Highway 45 north out of Watersmeet Michigan. About 5 miles out of Watersmeet, the road will begin a slow bend to the right. Watch for a road on the left side of 45 named "Robbins Pond Road" (old state hwy 45), there is usually a brown park sign right before, turn left on Robbins Pond Road. Follow the gravel road down about 3/8 mile until you see the dead end barricade shown above. During the summer months you will also see the sign put up by the National Park Service. As for the ELF location here is the address... Former ELF Communications Facility 3041 County Road FFG Republic, Michigan

| | | LOL @ the Paulding light... we were there for like 10 seconds and noticed that the "light" is directly in line with the highway, it tends to be white when cars are approaching and red when they're moving away... gee I wonder what that could be? Sure were a lot of people parked there oohing and ahing over it though, either they're not too bright or it's the only excuse they have to smoke pot and make out in their cars

LOL! Exactly. ...and Thank You for common sense. I was raised near there. And I must say have I have never been. There were better places to smoke pot, drink beer, and make out. It seems to be exciting to the out-of-towners. The rest of us roll our eyes and point in the direction it is located. [last edit 11/22/2010 10:03 PM by dodgeNburn74 - edited 1 times]
