First off, I hope this thread will serve effectively as my introduction, a way to find other explorers in the area, and as a gallery for my first couple sites. I'm currently attending school at the University of Pittsburgh, though I'm from Rochester, NY.

By some bizarre combination of being bored out of my mind this summer and having recently finished reading the Situationist International, a google search or two eventually landed me at infiltration.org. I was enthralled to the point that I read just about everything ever posted to the main site in a single sitting. From there it's no surprise I ended up here, and seeing as every other member seems to be from Rochester, I was suddenly disappointed that I'd be leaving for Pittsburgh in a couple weeks.

Nonetheless, over the course of those two weeks I managed to round up a dozen promising Pittsburgh locations with the help of google maps, and perhaps more importantly someone to go with. Our first excursion was chosen primarily because of our unique access to a car at the time, and resulted in an exhilarating albeit short-lived look around a large but not completely abandoned former state hospital. Henceforth operating within the confines of public transportation, my explorations will necessarily be more local, though the inability to access certain sites at the hours most suitable for their exploration will in all probability prove the most limiting effect of being busridden. After all, Pittsburgh was once the center of an industry long since defunct. And that brings us to my second, much more thorough, exploration.

A mere twenty-minute bus ride from the Pitt campus (and a mere three-hour walk, as I later found out) lies a relic immediately recognizable to anyone familiar with both Pittsburgh and this website. In a city where the river banks were once monopolized by the steel industry, this former blast furnace is the last of its kind not demolished to make way for a strip mall, or another such development. Perhaps because of this, the future survival of the furnace was purchased in 2006 with the stipulation that it be turned into a historic park. While the the renovations were supposed to have started in early 2009, I was relieved to find that the only sign of its pending "museafication" was the erection of two easily-breached barbed wire fences. So, what follows are probably too many poorly made point-and-shoot photographs, which themselves were culled from over a hundred tasteless shots:

So, who else lives here? I have quite a few targets on my list which still need visiting, from the university's steam tunnels to that place the end of Dogma was filmed in, but satellite maps and news archives are no substitute for someone more familiar with the area. And there are some things-- draining, for instance-- that I'd rather not tackle with but a few clueless topsiders and my own incompetence for company.

Welcome to Pittsburgh. And welcome to uer. There are definitely a lot places around here. I can see you have already been to one of the better places in the area. I work right up the hill from Pitt. Maybe I'll see you around!

I was headed to the Waterfront once, and twice I rode past on a motorcycle, not the type you can easily get down in there.

I visited Pitt once and plant to again later this semester. Honestly I was disappointed by the furnace. If anybody wants to do it you also better hurry up as they are supposed to start redeveloping it soon.

I'm hoping it will last until winter, as I'd like to see it in the snow, but I'm not holding my breath. Unfortunately the developers seem more concerned with what sort of office buildings they'd like to erect on the surrounding land rather than what they're going to do with the mill itself. If only I'd known about it last year.

Snow? May need to wait until March for that Pittsburgh seems to be located in a little ecological bubble

That's pretty wild, I would never have thought to do that under any conceivable circumstances.

Recently I've only had the opportunity to explore around campus, which was particularly easy on labor day. I managed to get on a few roofs, but an entrance to the steam tunnels still eludes me. A construction site that was but a field on google maps meant the loss of what I was sure was a way in. It was devastating.

"Steam Tunnels

Because of the danger to all who enter them, the steam tunnels are locked and anyone found in the tunnels will be subject to serious disciplinary action. The University Police are responsible for keeping the tunnels locked and apprehending anyone who trespasses in them."

Direct from the schools website so be real careful of that. Pretty active area if my memory serves me right.
