| | Hints for some roof hacking? < on 8/29/2009 12:24 PM >
| | | So outside of getting on the roofs of some abandonments, I've never really gone on the roof of an active buisness. I'm taking a trip to Grand Rapids in a few days, but instead of wandering the city for abandonments, I'm gonna check out some roof tops if possible. I'm going to reread the chapter on gaining access to roof tops in AAA, but could any of the veteran "roof hackers" offer some advice to hopefully keep me out of some uncomfortable situations?

| | | Not sure if anyone will reply for a handout, so... Look for alarm contacts, cameras, locks, and security/employees. If any of these exist, then do not attempt access. -- Good luck!

| | | A. Really. Big. Ladder!
hmm..
Well.. I don't wanna just give my secrets away. Next thing you know anyone who reads this will be on a roof, then someone will be seen / get hurt / do something dumb and then it becomes a National Security issue and then Door alarms start going up in most Buildings and Condos and then It might actually become hard (depending on the Building of course) But aside from giving out data.. Ok getting in to most apartments are easy.. even if there is Security in the Newer ones you can piggy back a person and just pretend to be with them. Starting up a conversation as you walk to towards the building together and then just letting him walk first into the lobby is a good way.. Then hit the elevator to the top and go to the stair's. There will be one of three things you need to get by to get onto a Roof. A Plain door with a lock. A hatch above a ladder. A Boiler Room with more doors and more doors and its a maze and you have to guess right ect ect.. I like the hatches as sometimes they aren't locked. The ones with doors yo just have to hope for them to be open. Beyond That.. well, if you are ever in the area I will take you out and you can Experience Lord's methods of Hit and Miss.. Does that help much?
I will defeat that which was once untouchable only so that I may now move on |

I hope this isn't comming across as asking for handouts. AAA, as well as browsing the forums/interwebz, gives me plenty of information. I'm just hoping for a bit more info to keep myself safe and/or out of jail, especially since I'll be in a strange city. Know what I mean?

Completely understand.
Good advice thus far, just the kind of stuff I'm looking for. Nothing specific, delightfully vague, but comming from an experienced roofer. Perfect!

| | | Look for fire escapes that are easy to pull down with your tripod. Be careful of alarmed ones though.

| | | What she said is true ^ but every now and then they might be alarmed, a friend of mine fell into a dumpster because the sound shocked him haha.
Just don't do anything that will attract attention like throwing poop off a rooftop.

| | | Thanks for the hints everyone! Unfortunately, I had zero luck. 2 different buildings had roof access blocked with one of those credit card swipe things, and the 3rd I visited had an old fashioned alarm which appeared active. Oh well, at least my hotel room was 18 stories up, got some nice shots from the room! I did find a storm drain, so all wasn't lost. Just didn't get very far in since I didn't have a flash light!

| | | Well, I like doing it the old fashion way, and climbing from the outside using whatever I can get my hands on. Of course since I live in a fairly small town, it's a lot easier to avoid being seen, so if you live in a big city I wouldn't recommend this. I also wouldn't do it for any extremely tall buildings. The highest I remember doing was a 6 story building. I highly recommend not doing this to be honest, it's not the smartest thing, I just do it for the thrill, plus it's easier to not get caught in my area. If you insist though, make sure you study the building well and plan every possible outcome, getting stuck half way up is not a fun scenario. Make sure you have a backup, and above all else make sure you can get down the way you came, or that there is a second way down. You should also make sure nothing is loose or weak before putting your full weight on it. I doubt you'll do this, it's really stupid to be honest, I don't recommend my way, that's probably the best advice I can give you to be honest. lol I actually used to do roofing as a teenager.. I have been on many many of Toronto's houses. It's fun as a hobby but when you have to lug 100lbs up a ladder 2 -3 floors then walk around on the roof itself (which can be damned steep at times) like 20 - 40 times a day, it loses its charm. Mind you hanging on the edge of a roof, hung over, trying not to fall and still work hard can make fear of heights a thing of the past.
