| | | Tembec Sawmill in Mattawa < on 8/23/2009 4:43 AM >
| | | Thanks to a lot of emails and phone calls by Intrinsic, we were able to get inside the Mattawa sawmill. It has been idle since July 2008 and permanently closed since February 2009. Some of the offices are still in use, but while we were there were guys shredding boxes and boxes and boxes and boxes of old files. I wish I could have found more of a detailed history, but Google failed me on that one. http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=28669 Preview:

| | | Sounds like there's a lot more activity in that place than I had previously assumed.
Here's a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you. |

| | | When we arrived on site the sole remaining employee was helping a contractor to shred old employee files. He had previously mentioned something about showing the place to investors in hopes of it being sold. Apparently there is now an investor who will be taking it over. The location was never truly abandoned but rather vacated and left to one person to keep safe from vandals, etc. Edit: Other Ontario mills are being shut down this summer either temporarily or permanently. | | | Well, as much as I like abandoned buildings, this is good news. Especially in Small Town, Northern Ontario...a company full of people working to feed their families is a good thing. I'm sure the people of Mattawa area, especially those who lost their jobs and are still without work, are very happy with this announcement. And good on Tembec for accepting the whole $1 thing, grudgingly or not. [last edit 9/2/2009 1:21 AM by Wander Woman - edited 1 times]
