As suggested by SteamPunk, I stopped by Carolin Mine on Sunday. I was there a long time ago, but I dont remember the gate being there, I had to walk in just over a kilometer. Here are a few shots that I hope you enjoy.

After leaving the mine I also decided to stop by the Ladner creek trestle. Built in 1911 it was part of a very expensive section of the KVR.

Very cool. I love old trestles! Too bad they blew up the tunnel, though.

Great thread and photos. If they plugged that tunnel on purpose, without imploding it with dynamite, a work party with beer, shovels and wheelbarrows could fix that problem...

I have read that the tunnel was blasted to fill it in to prevent people from accessing the trestle. Of course you can just climb over the top however it is a bit sketchy. The other side offers a bit more depth but there is approximately 100' or more of filled in tunnel.

The two portals were just built at different times. When originally constructed (1916) this tunnel was likely lined with timber bracing to protect against the poor quality of rock that the tunnel goes through. Even with the construction of the portals in 1944 and 1949, the bracing would likely have remained between the portals (common practice). In many of the tunnels along the KVR, upon abandonment or in the years following, the bracing was removed allowing the roof to cave in. This has been done to prevent injury/death of people camping/hiking in the tunnels.

Beautiful.

Does anyone know the status of KVR bike trail repairs after the fires wiped out some trestles a few years back.

There was a gate going to the mine? that must be new, it wasn't there last year when i went. Nice pix!

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too!

The KVR has been beautifully restored. All of the trestles have been rebuilt in historically accurate ways--the parks dept (i think it was them) even went as far as to build it with extra extra thick wood ties and beams, so the trestles would look like the originals, which had been built out of heavy old-growth timber beams. Tourists are flooding back to ride the route, although until the forests regrow, the wine and orchards will have to be the main draw.

Ya there was a very sturdy gate that looked relatively new a little over 1 KM before the mine. It is situated in such a place that it is impossible to get around, not even with a quad or dirt bike. It looks like they are doing some more mining in the general area, as the road is in very good condition and looks well traveled. In the fourth pic, taken from the conveyor catwalk, you can see an excavator on the hillside.

Is it possible they are filling in the mine adits? It looks like it. Getting in the mines will be very hard now.

If they were, they hadn't started yet. At least not in the general vicinity of the main adit there. I only spent around an hour and a half at the site, so I didnt venture too far from the main building. There was also this ore hauler right beside the building.

They've done a helluva job with restorations - here's a few pics I've taken this year. I go cycling here all the time:

Sorry for going a bit astray with my post... anyway, at the OP - damn those are some great shots. I may have to venture out that way for a look-see myself sometime soon. Thanks so much for sharing.

Oh, that's not from the pine beetles; it's from the same fire that burned the trestles. (in 2003 IIRC - it was before I moved here)
